Exporting my bike from Thailand to the UK

Featured Replies

After almost 15 years in Thailand my wife, kids and I are moving back the UK and I'd like to take my bike (HD Nightster).

Does anyone have any experience of doing this and can recommend shippers, or offer any advice? Can anyone clarify the Duty i will have to pay on arrival in the UK?

You will be charged 20% VAT on estimated retail value in UK by customs , then the bike will need SVA inspection for registration about £400 , so expect a bill for about £1800 -£2000 in all plus shipping costs of about £600 , then insurance and road tax on top .

is it worth it , maybe better to sell here at a high price relative to UK ( double ) and buy a new one there with zero hassle or worry and probably save yourself a load of money for bling

what year is your bike ????

I'd thought of exactly those points LJ, the bike is a 2010 and I've had it recently repaired and customed a bit following an accident. The reason I'm keen to keep it is the customisation - paint, wheels....The decision to move back to the UK came after the work on the bike....

I think this is a classic case of "you don't own things, things own you" If money is not an issue yes of course you can. Stick it in the container with your household goods.

All the info you need is on UK government website.

Economically smart thing would be sell it here as has been said but maybe you need a souvenir?

I have imported cars and a bike into the u.k on several occasions both from Thailand and the Middle East, providing you have owned for over 6 months NO DUTY is payable.
