One of the biggest differences there, is there is a very powerful taboo against western men being with a local woman. Very unlike Thailand. So, you will find the woman will not even be willing to be seen in public with you. If she does, loads of scorn will be heaped on both of you. Vietnamese are largely a very cold, distant, closed minded people. They do not carry the level of fulfillment and happiness that the Thai people manage to manifest on a daily basis. Sometimes, it feels like each soul there is carrying the burden of the last two centuries on their shoulders. Not a happy lot by any stretch of the imagination. And I have been there several times, in both the north and the south, though I will say the south is infinitely more pleasant than the north, where an oppressive pall hangs in the air constantly.

Nice girls in Ha Noi do get married first. Don't know about the south. I spent time with two girl 22 and 27, both very elegant. No problems with local population

After having another look at the scene if this isn't the worst written and staged scene in the history of movie making I really don't know what is. Her accent is pathetic probably found her in a coffee shop in London. Remember this movie was shot in southern England. The dialogue is so stereotypical and inaccurate. First off, in terms of what Spidermilk said about women not wanting to be seen in public with a foreigner, don't believe that for a minute. Unless you live in some small village or some shi**hole part of town, women will be more than happy to be with a foreigner.

As far as them "carrying the burden of the last two centuries on their shoulders", this is 2014, Vietnamese are more concerned about getting wealthy than caring about the past. What women do have to shoulder is the responsibility of their families and if they come from a deadbeat family it can be burdensome, but which is also a reason why they want to meet a foreigner (and also a reason why you need to be wary).

I lived there for years, mainly in the south, and I can honestly say that some of the sexiest women I have ever seen -- even just walking down the street, in a bank, coffee shop, or wherever -- were in Vietnam. Women go to a great extent to look beautiful and there's a great emphasis on always looking good (they prefer older guys too). Some may not agree with me but I've lived in numerous countries in Asia for years and will say that Vietnamese women rank pretty high on the beauty scale.

BUT -- and I can't emphasize this enough -- you have to be careful because for every pretty girl looking for a nice guy there's a pretty girl waiting to bleed you dry. Vietnamese women make Thai girls look like a bunch of amateurs in this regard, they really, really, can.

Many cultural similarities with Thai women but IMHO much more beautiful and gentle. They genuinely love sex and will often indulge without there being monetary strings attached. The main difference is, as has been noted above, the attitude of others to foreigner/local relationships. It is illegal for unmarried mixed couples to stay in the same room and many hotels (certainly 4 and 5 star) will insist you book separate rooms. Also there is no bar scene like there is in Thailand (where is there?). There are obviously hookers in most hotel bars and there are several bars in Saigon (called "bier hom") where you can go upstairs for a BJ or take the girls home if you wish. You can also get happy endings (and sometimes more) in massage parlors.

Don't believe the crap about them not being "a happy lot." While they have every reason to be downcast given their history and circumstances they are extremely resilient and friendly and respond very well to foreigners, especially away from the big cities - same as most countries.

I live in Bangkok, I have been here for less than 2 years, I travel about 70% of the time within Australasia for my job. So you may conclude Bangkok is primarily my bedroom community. I love the food, the airport and the friendliness of the Thai people. I have several important clients in both Hanoi and Saigon and I travel there minimally 6 times a year. I can only speak from my experience. Here are my observations and opinions which will be different to those of others.

1) Generally, I personally have learned not to trust Thai women. It is sad how often their mothers use them to fetch money for them. They might not be working as bone fide prostitutes, but in many ways their families prostitute them by encouraging them to marry or date a farang with money. The Thai people in general are egocentric and do not easily fall in love in the true sense as much as they look for material security, and this has been verified by social psychologists who have researched Thai culture. Read Suntaree Komin, Ph.D. on the internet. She is a Senior Fulbright Scholar and a member of the Thai Royal Educational Patronage Society. She is Internationally respected and the leading expert on the psychology of the Thai people. Dr. Komin is Thai.

2) In, general, Vietnamese women are more traditional and conservative. Again in general, they are less likely to quickly get involved sexually with their boyfriends. They value marriage much more than the Thai women and ad in general are more loyal. They are not as greedy as Thai women. Also they are not as egocentric.

3) If you are looking for recreational sex, Thailand is the place to be. If you are looking for a wife and starting a family, I personally recommend you look in Vietnam. Now my statements are only a comparison between Thailand and Vietnam. Furthermore it is based on my personal observation and experiences.
