Foreign Ministry: Thai nationals in Iraq remain safe despite heavy clashes

BANGKOK, 18 June 2014 (NNT) – The Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed that no Thai nationals have been injured or killed in heavy clashes between Sunni insurgents and security forces in Iraq.

Ministry Spokesman Sek Wannamethee said the ministry had been in touch with the Thai embassy based in Baghdad regarding the developing crisis in the Middle Eastern country. Recently, jihadist militants, spearheaded by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), took control of Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, prompting around 500,000 people to flee their homes.

The embassy said that the initial survey has found that all Thai citizens in the country remain safe and no one was living in war-torn areas. A total of 40 Thai nationals currently reside in the Gulf state.

The embassy added that if the fighting between both sides intensifies, Thai citizens will be given assistance and are urged to evacuate.

BANGKOK, June 18 -- A Thai military court on Wednesday granted bail to anti-coup academic Worajet Pakeerat, only a few hours after ordering him to 12 days detention.

Mr Worajet was released on condition he not take part in political gatherings or express his opinions in such a way as to incite public disorder.

He is also banned from travelling abroad unless with court permission, and was ordered to report to the court on June 29.

Bail was set at Bt20,000.

Crime Suppression Division (CSD) Deputy Commander Pol Col Prasobchoke Prommoon, heading a CSD investigation team earlier brough the Thammasat University law lecturer to the Military Court on charges of defying the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) order to report, seeking imprisonment for 12 days in the first phase.

With a straight face, the detained scholar told a group of journalists that he was not captured at the airport while returning from abroad, had asked close friends to coordinate with the authorities, informing them that he would like to turn himself in on June 16.

The court earlier approved a 12 day detention June 18-29. However, the court later granted him bail after his lawyer provided a Bt40,000 bail bond. (MCOT online news)

Anti-coup protests dwindle in Thailand
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, June 18 -- The number of protests against the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has decreased nationwide, according to Thai police and army officials.

Pol Gen Somyot Poompanmoung, Deputy Chief of the Royal Thai Police and Maj Gen Apirat Kongsompong, Commander of the 1st Division King's Guard, and other police and army officers met Wednesday to discuss the protest situation in Thailand.

It was reported that the number of anti-coup protests has decreased, and no call for more gatherings has been found in recent social media.

Officials believe the decreasing number of anti-coup protesters was due to a lack of leaders and others who stir up the people against the military junta.

Meanwhile the latest poll shows that the majority of Thai people want to give NCPO time to restore and run the country.

A majority of Thais are satisfied with the effective protest control measures used by police and military as well as cooperation from shopping centres which protesters used as gathering venues.

Gen Somyot warned the public that posting or sharing Facebook and Line messages, scheduling and using any form of anti-coup protests is illegal and violators could face up to seven years in jail. (MCOT online news)
