Popular Post mikebike Posted July 29, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 29, 2014 Gonna start stripping down and rebuilding my TZM into a naked-cafe-streetfighter... So any and all input appreciated. Here's the plan: 1. Strip the little <deleted> down to parts. Toss anything and everything superfluous; 2. Relocate the 2T oil reservoir, chop the rear subframe, reshape the seat and cowl, use LED taillight and signals for a more tidy and modern rump; 3. Replace the instrument cluster/headlight with one from ER6n or similar aftermarket piece. Ideally source out suitable (one that fits easily!!) inverted fork with dual disks; 4. Not much to paint - front fender, headlight cowl, tank, seat cowl will be red like this: and frame/swingarm and hard bits are gonna be black. Some silver and chrome accents to keep it from being boring... and just a 3" crossed tuning forks raised 'medallion' logo on each side of the tank . That's what I got so far... any ideas - funky or practical - will be considered!! 3
mikebike Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 Forgot to mention: any parts-sourcing ideas welcome as well!! As the build goes on I may need help with some specific items...
mikebike Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 Tailpiece like this (from Honda) is what I'm imagining... along with rebending/angling of the muffler/tailpipe to bring it up under the passenger footrest.
mikebike Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 Think it will look a lot like this only naked... Can anyone identify what the seat/rear cowl is off of?
casualbiker Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 What you going to do about that pig ugly expansion tank exhaust. Sent from my XT1032 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
mikebike Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 Being a fan of smokers I'll be looking replace the Yammy part with a tuned expansion chamber at some point - "pig ugly' to some is the simple beauty of two strokes to others... 2

mikebike Posted July 29, 2014 Author Posted July 29, 2014 Seem to be a number of middle-aged Thai bike enthusiast around where I live... they grew up on smokers and their kids seem to be into 2T motocross... apparently there are a few old hands around to manufacture chambers and there are still some aftermarket kits out there.
VocalNeal Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Tyga has the silencer if the mounting is a "conventional" three bolt fixing. Made for an NSR 150 but....Expansion chamber they don't have but Poon Sub (spelling) market you might find one as the old strokers never die. 1
Popular Post Dutchbike Posted July 29, 2014 Popular Post Posted July 29, 2014 Some 2 stroke expansion chambers are like a work of art.Tyga-Performance MC18 Chambers.[attachment=277136:expansion chamber.jpg] 3
Dutchbike Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Nice project keep us updated, your plans sound good, keep it simple. Mayby dual disks are a bit over the top for a light bike as the TZM. As you might know the TZM is still very popular in Malaysia enough inspiration on various site ( bike pics.com) Nice ones......[attachment=277140:bikepics-2172512-800.jpg] and questionable ones.......[attachment=277142:TZM..... but different.jpg][attachment=277141:TZM.... but different 2.jpg] 1
ll2 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 OP, just keep it as it is like the first photo. Marlboro one. Nice one! It looks the best IMO.
yankee99 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I think if you want to really trick it out a single sided swing arm is in order.
ll2 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I think if you want to really trick it out a single sided swing arm is in order. if you can find one nowadays! a honda nsr150 proarm makes this bike a great looker!
VocalNeal Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Mine is the GP style two on one side so not quite so ornate. 1
VocalNeal Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Mine is the GP style with both on the same side so not quite so ornate. Also older!

mikebike Posted July 30, 2014 Author Posted July 30, 2014 Here is a quick Photoshop of what I am thinking for the end product.... 1
ll2 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Here is a quick Photoshop of what I am thinking for the end product.... all cool but rectangular headlight sure will look better!
VocalNeal Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 ^ Square headlights are , well, so '80's! The headlight from say a Honda Zoomer would be more , now! A large round one from say a Phantom would be more "cafe".
Overandout Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Nice project! Hope you get on with it quicker than me with mine!
mikebike Posted August 1, 2014 Author Posted August 1, 2014 Nice project! Hope you get on with it quicker than me with mine! How long has yours been in-the-works?
Overandout Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Nice project! Hope you get on with it quicker than me with mine! How long has yours been in-the-works? Depends when you count from! I am building one "good" bike from 2 not so good bikes... I bought the first one in September last year, the second one in November. I actually got the tools out and started taking one of them apart in January... So I'd say 6 months really. 1

I've already had a "tool" issue... many rusted/locked fasteners... I need an impact driver and an easy-out!!

Well, 6 months to take one bike apart is hardly good going, but at least I've had more luck than you. The bike was sitting in a garden open to the elements for several years before I got my greasy hands on it yet only one snapped bolt in the whole process! No rounded hears and no stripped threads. Bit of a result really. 1
lust Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 I think it looks really cool how it sits now. I would leave it as is and just do some small touches.
