I didn't think we had a choice unless we take our own life, otherwise I believe, "Shit Happens," and then we're on our way out. That's what prompted me to early retirement as shit started happening to too many of my friends and co-workers......

totally agree.We all gotta go sometime but no one wants a long protracted illness.

Agreed but I would still prefer that to the prospect of ending up like some of the derelict Farang currently calling Coconut Bar home. 

I'd like to die like those cowboys in the old western movies.

In a crowded bar, I suddenly jump up and stagger about clutching my chest. I fall to the ground and a caring but tough friend rushes up and holds me in his arms. I manage to stutter out a few words like "tell Noi I love her" or "the keys to the bike are under the door matt" I have a couple of dramatic gasps, ga ga gaa, eyes wide I tell everyone it's getting dark now! Repeat a couple of times. All the girls are crying as I am carried out like a hero.

Or I just fall down pissed at home and the cleaner finds me.

I assist older foreigners in Chiang Mai www.LannaCareNet.org and I think the OP's experience is probably typical for younger foreigners -- i.e. just 4 out of 10 having on-going medical expenses before death. But for those 4, I suspect their medical expenses were sizable. You don't fight AIDS, cancer or live three years in bed due to a broken back without running up some big bills. That's the point of having health insurance.

But, as you age the likelihood of dying from road accidents, in bar fights or being shot in a domestic dispute decreases. Most people get more sensible about their actions, or maybe physical infirmity just limits their tomcat urges. Anyway, you become more likely to fall victim to medical problems that will be chronic, debilitating and make it difficult to control the circumstances of your death.

There is no free medical care for foreigners in Thailand and concepts like pain control and end-of-life care are a couple generations behind what is practiced in the west -- especially for someone without money. It really is something you should think about if you plan to spend the rest of your life in Thailand. Your Thai family may mean well when they say they'll take care of you for life, but they'll probably be ill-equipped to provide the care you'll truly need if faced with one of the conditions the OPs four friends suffered during their final days -- AIDS, cancer or a broken back that keeps you confined to bed.

I n the end it would depend on the diagnosis to be able to make a valid decision.For example some chemo/radiation can work but most just gives you some extra months with accompanying pain and degradation and you end possibly throwing away money that could have been left to living loved ones.

 

For if or when i get some form of cancer i would treat by diet with the help of a machine(cost about 5000 USD) that emits high frequency waves that zoom in on the cancerous cells to reduce size quickly.

 

Each to their own how they handle these things,but that would be my plan

The 'falling down pissed' part doesnt worry me - it's the prospect of regaining consciousness long enough to suffer in the days before the 'cleaner' finds me. We've all read news stories where we've reflexively thought 'No way am I going out like that !'. Someone mentioned MH17 earlier - I think that would have been quicker than it is for many elderly people. 

ok thanks i did n't read................but i would hate to be stuck in a hospital at the mercy of doctors.

i know this already. it will be suicide. but no immediate or even short term need. one step in front of the other going nowhere special till then.

I intend to live forever. So far, so good................................

I actually had a near death experience, was about as close as you could possibly get.

I was at work and managed to get myself hooked onto an electric resistor panel carrying 500 v DC.

I spent a minute or so while being blasted lucidly reflecting on

1. How I came to be in this predicament.

2. Angry that I was going to die at work.

3. Sadness that I was going to die

My last thought was for my son and that I was no longer going to be there for him. That was it. It all went peaceful and I was unconscious. I was found by a work mate completely blue and he managed to get me off the power and I came to. DC power does not defribrillate the heart, just stops it. It made a huge mess of my arm and had big exit wounds all over me though.

So it's worthwhile remembering. When you are about to die you don't think of your money, homes, toys. Just the people you care most for.

While im masturbating with a belt tied around me neck and i accidentally asphyxiate myself.
