Introduction to Personal Income Tax in Thailand
A couple of months ago I posted here to ask about what to put on the form where it asks for the Thai tax ID number of the payer of the income in the case that the payer is the UK government. Not knowing the answer, I decided to wait until March, in the hope that the situation would become clearer. I finally filed this month using the online system with the help of a Thai friend. I am describing my experience in the hope it may help others in a similar situation. I have been filing a Thai tax return since 2012, but this is the first time I have had to include foreign source income brought to Thailand. My assessable income consists of interest on deposits in Thai banks and UK old age pension. It totals a hair under 500KB. It turned out to be simpler than I expected. I entered the UK pension amount in part 1 of page 2 of the PND90 online website form. It then asks for tax withheld (presumably they are interested in Thai tax withholding, not others?). I entered zero because no tax was withheld either here or in the UK. The website then offers the option of it being foreign source income, which I chose. The website automatically entered the 100KB deduction allowed (but not more than 50% of the income) and subtracted this. It did not require a Thai TIN for the payer of the income. The website also automatically entered my old age (over 65) deduction of 190KB against my interest income. The various deductions (100KB + 60KB + 190KB) reduced my income to a hair under 150KB. Consequently, I do not owe any tax and should get back all the tax which was deducted from interest. I will post further here if this is actually successful, However, I have always received such refunds previously. I didn't declare non-assessable income, which in my case is US social security, since this is clearly excluded by the tax treaty. I did not attempt to claim foreign tax as a credit towards Thai tax under a double taxation treaty---I do not know whether or not this is possible with the current online system. I hope this experience is helpful for others in a similar situation. -

Is Thailand Still a Good Place to Spend Time if You're on a Fixed Budget?
I've been living in Pattaya for the past 24 years. When I'm asked by friends if Pattaya is a good place to retire to I respond like this. Pattaya is made up of expats and tourists. A person must decide which category they come under. Expats 60 yo plus must be careful to live like expats, that is the way they live your normal life. If these same expats live like tourist they will either run out of money or fall of the perch. Many expats have fallen for this trap and died prematurely. -

Air Conditioners - Bought the Wrong Model
I can guess why they might be dumping Panasonic machines here, locally, if they are. I have mentioned the reasons in previous posts. This is a shame, really. But, with ACs and other consumer appliances... SERVICE is the name of the game if you want to stay in the market. Next time I go to HomePro, the one near here, I will ask the store for the story. Quite interesting, in my view. -

Is Thailand Still a Good Place to Spend Time if You're on a Fixed Budget?
I live a very pleasant life in a very nice condo. Eat mostly Thai food. I do not spend $$ on gals other than few tips here and there. I drink local beers, rarely eat or drink any imported stuff. I eat thai food almost exclusively because i prefer it. I ride baht buses and bolt or walk most everywhere. I Am healthy so far and spend little to nothing on medical care which i deal with on once a year trip back to usa where i am fully covered. I read lots of books, watch too much tv, too much time online, go out to bars probably every other night but have about 3 beers, don't ring any bells or try to play the big shot. I exercise couple of hours everyday and overall am happier than I was back in usa. I live easily on social security and do not touch any of my stocks or other investments. I have found that i do not even spend my full soc security and every month have almost 1000 usd left over. IF you do not blow a load on the gals, eat western imported food, drink imported wines, go to the top tourist restaurants and don't feel you need to impress anyone there is no reason that most anyone can not live a very pleasant life in pattaya without spending a fortune. I would say the two biggest wildcards are females where some guys do "blow a load" and medical care where you may have no choice.
