Chrome 64-bit available now

Featured Replies

Oh thx will try it out. My Favorite Browser is still Opera (23.0) and testing Firefox Nighlty (64bit). Nice...

What advantages would an average user gain installing 64 bit Chrome? What risks?

Is this going to bugger up my extensions?

Just to save me downloading and installing if it is, you understand.

No problem; go for it.

Thanks,JSixpack,

Just loaded it on my Dell.

Scored 509 on the www.html5test.com.

But never checked the previous one !!

Just loaded it on my Lenovo i7 CPU based laptop. Ran above test while still on the 32 bit version and got a score of 512 of 555. Downloaded/installed the 64-bit version which didn't even take 30 seconds...confirmed I was now running the 64 bit version as shown in image below. Ran the test again on the 64 bit version and once again got a score of 512 of 555.

I was running 5 extensions...only 4 survived the 32 bit to 64 but change. Reloaded the 5th extension from the Chrome store and although my Chrome shows it activated and an extension icon shows up it's not working properly...it's a Norton password related extension. Not a big deal for now as the the Norton extension still works on IE11 which is my secondary browser.

I can't tell any real world difference other than 1 of my 5 extension no longer works...guess that extension and 64-bit Chrome just don't get along yet. I'll play with the 64 bit version for a few days before I decide whether I want to revert back to the 32 bit version to get all my extensions working again and give the 64 bit a little more time to stabilize along with some extensions which I expected will need to undergo some tweaking. Maybe my 5th extension will magically start working...I'll check out the Norton Community site for crossfeed the extension and Chrome 64 bit.

Went to the Norton Community website...saw plenty of bitching about the extension not working in Chrome 64 bit. So, I decided not to mess around with the 64 bit version so I downloaded/re-installed the 32 bit version...confirmed I was back to a 32 bit version per the image below...notice it no longer says 64 bit at the end meaning it's the 32 bit version...only took about 30 seconds total download/install.

Now all 5 of my extensions are working again. Yea, I give the various extensions more time to catch up with the Chrome 64 bit version...I'll revisit Chrome 64 bit in a few months.

That was worth it.

509 on the old one.

505 on the new one.

Was just able to confirm that one Norton extension that works fine on Chrome 32 bit but not Chrome 64 bit apparently only likes Chrome 32 bit. Below is cut and paste from the Norton site regarding the extension and which browsers it works with.

So, if switching to the Chrome 64 bit browser be sure to check out all your extensions afterwards to ensure they still work...they still may appear as enabled with an icon showing but actually may not work properly...but maybe all your extension will work....many, many available Chrome extensions and everyone uses different ones.

Supported browsers:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 or later

  • Mozilla Firefox (latest 32-bit major release)

  • Google Chrome (latest 32-bit major release)

  • Opera 10.0 or later

  • Apple Safari 4.0 or later

For the particular Norton extension (actually it's two Norton extensions which kinda integrate with each other) that didn't work with Chrome 64 bit, Norton is now saying a patch will be out in a few weeks to allow the extension to work with Chrome 64 bit. See this link if you use the Norton Toolbar/Identity Safe extension.

Google 64 bit: 1914

So the winner is: Firefox Nightly 64bit , at least on my system.

It's a pile of poo, now I get 502 gateway errors all over the place and have to refresh at least once to get through.

On my Surface Pro, (1920*1080 with 125% scaling) all of the fonts look much better. Clearer and sharper.

On my Dell V131 (1366*768, no scaling) , everything looks the same as it did with the previous version of chrome.

I think if you have a hi-res display and are using desktop scaling, then the newer version seems to handle the scaling better.

Doesn't seem a common problem w/ the release. Update all the plugins? But you know how to troubleshoot. Maybe it's not gonna work for you.

Will add my observation as when I first read this post had already found my Chrome was displaying all my four stored websites larger than my normal setting (but did not check browser setting and not aware this was something to do with new version). When I checked version it did not say 64 bit however and tried to download and install twice only to be told same version already installed. Today I checked and it is marked as 64 bit. So it appears did install on its own. I also note that the bookmarks line has lost several of the previous links due larger type and that I am now using at 100% rather than the much large setting I previously had to use on my 1920x1080 display.

Well DHCP was working for me but obviously this release affects that somehow.

So I went and set the OpenDNS IPs everywhere and that's solved the problem.

My troubleshooting approach was to revert to Chrome 32 bit. I'll give Chrome 64 bit and all the extension/plug-in developers a few months to get back on the same page.

Or, get rid of Norton. :) Use Lastpass as your password manager (everybody needs one).

I could but guess I'm just use to Norton I'D Safe on my machines as I've used it for years...it still works fine on IE and Chrome 32 bit. I'll just give all the extension/apps developers a few months to tweak their products to Chrome 64.
