Bought a NorthStar instant hot water heater four years ago. 7995 baht. Used it three months, shook out the water, and stored it.

Sold it last week. Guy calls back the next day and says it doesn't heat. Refunded his money.

Question: can a heater, especially a high quality one, go bad simply from not using it?

Could he have hooked it up wrong?

Sold him the cheaper one I had, watched him hook it up, and it worked.

3 things to check

1. Check element, test on ohms with a digital multimeter, should get a reading between 0.5k and 2k ohms

2. Check thermostat by turning to max, then with a digital multimeter, should get a low reading between 0.1 and 1 ohm

3 Check RCD! might need resetting

Thanks.

I'm thinking it was the RCD. But he had already removed it before I got there, so I couldn't check it.

Unfortunately, there are no real electricians in Rhek Thum. This guy was the guy to call, and he had a screwdriver and a pair of wire strippers. He installed the replacement heater, with live wires, while standing on the wet shower floor.

Just don't think storing it could cause the problem.

Um, this is a real Thai sparky mate.

.

He's one of few Thais I've seen with very frizzy hair. Hmmm.

Oh, and his 5 year old was standing right behind him, yakking away.

But at least he had on flip-flops.

Could also be a stuck flow-switch.

Check the condition of all the water seals and make sure the flow-switch actuates when sufficient water flow is achieved.

Sometimes the internal flow-switch can be impeded by tiny amounts of corrosion or mineral build-up preventing the heater circuit from energizing.

A few years ago I bought a 6kw Sharp bathroom water heater. I took it home and installed it myself and it didn't work, no hot water. So I took it back and the shop gave me another one. I installed that one and it didn't work either! Then I pushed the RCD reset button and all was fine! Opps! But it won't happen again.

I was in my bare feet on a wet bathroom floor also, but the breaker was tripped as I don't have any visible hair to curl!

No problem. Just put a happy face on it.

If you want help in this forum, you need to give more information and photos always help.

AS said more info will help. Do the lights come on on the ubit, usually one for power and one when it is heating.

If it's not heating the water, reset the RCD located on the heater, usually a button on the front. Also look in you consumer unit and reset the RCD there, if you have one, or just reset the circuit breaker.

If it's still not heating, remove your shower head and try it. My water is very "hard" and the head becomes clogged and restricts the water flow and the internal "flow switch" will not turn on.

Any more suggestions will require more info but there's not much else that you can do.
