Don't erect big images of me: Prayuth

PM General Prayuth Chan-ocha, wearing a prarajathan silk shirt, shows and explains each of his rings to reporters after his first official Cabinet meeting at Government House yesterday.

BANGKOK: -- BEFORE PRIME Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha visited the flood-affected province of Sukhothai last Friday evening, local officials set up a big cut-out with a larger-than-life image to welcome the new PM.

But in fact Prayuth ordered such images to be taken down in his policy address to parliament last Friday morning.

Yesterday the premier gave an order to the Cabinet forbidding the display of any picture glorifying ministers or state officials along the streets or in other public areas, the deputy government spokesman said.

Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, the newly-appointed deputy government spokesperson, elaborated on the order after the Cabinet met yesterday, saying the PM didn't want to see such cut-outs as they invariably use taxpayers' money. Sansern said Prayuth said there was no need to display images of politicians or government officials, as it is their duty to carry out jobs for the public.

"It's better to show what he has done," said Sansern of his boss. "So if someone wants to put up a cut-out then put details about the works he has done that has had an affect on the public, but please don't show his image."

Sansern added that local politicians should also use their judgement on what is appropriate or not when it comes to such things.

Other directives given by Prayuth yesterday included that informal advisers for ministers not have name cards printed, as there are too many of them. He also ordered the salary of assistants to ministers to be cut.

Currently, an assistant to a minister earns a government salary of Bt63,800 but Prayuth wanted that reduced to Bt50,000 in order to save Bt13,800 of taxpayers' money.

"There are 30 assistants to ministers all in all. Bt400,000 can be saved each month and used for other benefits," Sansern explained.

Prayuth also ordered that all schools that carry posters detailing the 12 Thai values advocated by the National Council for Peace and Order should ensure that the poster doesn't come with his image.

Bad news for at least a couple of members here.

Could set a private portrait room aside perhaps?

Thinking about it, I already miss all those huge billboards with Yingluck on it.

the salaries aren't important....money is made with corruption in such positions.....Lets see how Prayuth will be able to control that.

Phew!..........that's freed up a few hours on Saturday for me then!

I've always been amazed at how Thais don't see government employees as their servants. Deifying public servants (or anyone for that matter) using taxpayer money is reprehensible.

What size is big ? is e saying medium sized images of himself are ok ? Did he issue any size guidelines ?

Are reclining images of the General ok ?

Perhaps this will help to ease the pain of your loss

So, posting 'images' uses taxpayers money'. Posting 'details about the works he has done......' doesn't ???

I wonder how these assistants are supposed to pay for the schools for their children with a salary like that, not to mention car, mai noi etc...

And the microphones cost 145,000 Baht EACH.

Good idea, that really would be too Orwellian. However the concept of advocating 12 Thai Values unfortunately reminds me of the SLORC "Peoples Desire" signs that were all over Yangon when I was there in '96

I wonder how big is big, in theses erection mentioned here?

Haha, 3 times the same image because you couldn't find three different ones?

Love it. I was just saying this to see if you would bite. LOL

Anyhow, having your image at an ARMY ORGANIZED concert is not the same as having your image ALL OVER Thailand.

I missed any usable point in this.

I didn't :)

I like this man's style...especially the photo-op...where he surrounded himself with young adoring women to get his pic taken...you go sir!

i love big brother Prayuth

Hmm. Big Brother Prayuth, maybe. However I have the phrase 'Pay no attention to that (wo)man behind the curtain!' ringing in my ears.

The Wizard of Oz was a classic film.

And since we have diverted into showing images of dictators, and since the mods don't mind, please allow me to share this image of a dictator wannabee.

Oh yes, us mods do mind, posts containing off topic images have been removed.

Thanks for having a sense of humor...laughed out loud at your reply...tks...
