BANGKOK: -- POLICE have arrested a man with a history of drug use and mental illness after he allegedly stabbed to death his wife and daughter and then burned their bodies in his pickup truck on a Samut Sakhon road on Friday night.

Chumphon and Samut Sakhon police jointly apprehended Rames Rattana, 37, on Saturday when someone saw him lurking around a vehicle parked at a major intersection in Chumphon, his home province, and called police. It was unclear if Rames had been charged as of yesterday.

Police said Rames' relatives told them that he suffered from stress and used narcotics before undergoing therapy two years ago.

Police quoted Rames as saying he stabbed his wife, Orawan Rattana, 37, and his daughter, Thip-asksorn Rattana, 12, after fighting with his wife over whether the family would keep travelling from Samut Sakhon to Chumphon.

They were travelling in the pickup truck off Rama II Road in Muang district and he pulled over and they got out of the car.

Police said he told them that his daughter Thip-asksorn Rattana, 12, was stabbed accidentally after trying to block him from stabbing her mother. He was not sure where his daughter was stabbed.

He was carrying his daughter to the vehicle and his wife tried to take her away from him and he stabbed her.

Police said he told them that he tried to drive his daughter to hospital, but the vehicle got bogged. He then set fire to the vehicle and fled before stealing a motorcycle and riding it to Chumphon. When it ran out of fuel he stole another motorcycle in Chumphon. He planned to ride it through a military barracks there but suspected it may belong to a soldier so he abandoned it.

Rames then tried to steal a car and was arrested.

Sadly drugs are an ever increasing problem in Thai society, despite all the big busts we read about. Only the top of the iceberg.

This sort of thing happens all the time and is so common it's barely newsworthy anymore. Recently a woman in my wife's home village was stabbed repeatedly, battered by a concrete block and then thrown into a fishing pool with the block attached......by her husband. Why ? He was angry that she didn't have any drug money for him. I don't think that even made the news.

I just hope that they were dead before he set them on fire !

Prostitution and drugs have been around since ancient times. As long as you stay away from such, and those that do engage, then your life will be safe.

Yes your right, but not the drugs used today, Crystal Meth, Rock Cocaine, etc., are a few of the most dangerous, addicting drugs used by Thais, this is proof of their addicting fate.

The story says he was alleged to have killed his wife and daughter. The headline says he did it. In the UK, that would probably be enough to get you off a murder charge as a fair hearing would be impossible. But TiT. . .

The news report states quite clearly he admitted to police, and to all that he'd done, in sequence, prior to becoming news. It was, for once, established info before being released to the press.

For an uncontrollable nutcase like this, euthanasia would be best. What a senseless waste of precious life

Psychics who examine such cases and sign to release them back into public should go to the slammer as well if things like this happen. Perhaps then they would take their job seriously and assure that hopeless cases like this one stay where they belong: In a super max mental facility, or (better) six feet under where they can't harm anyone anymore, ever!
