Time to Renew VPN - Which Do You Like

Recommended Posts

My Witopia subscription is expiring. $69.99 a year for personalVPN Pro. Happy with it, but wouldn't mind finding something cheaper. I use if mainly for accessing banks, brokers, etc. Needs to be Linux and Windows compatable.

What do you use, and how do you like it?

Cheers.

69.99 seems expensive......For a 200-300 USD you can rent a dedicated server, who could do huge number of VPNs at the same time.

I was looking at switching to privateinternetaccess.com. $39.95 a year. They allow you to log in to 5 devices at a time. PC mag editor's choice.

I use Openvpn's Private Tunnel on a data usage plan. Prefer this over paying for a monthly plan where I may not use it that often. 50GB $12.00USD, 100GB $20.00USD, 500GB $50.00USD. No expiration on the data usage plan.

With a bit of tech savvy, get an Amazon AWS instance under their free usage tier and set it up as a VPN server.

Without reasonable speed and traffic limitations?

Been using private internet access . com for about 1.5 years, using on both windows and Linux (90% Linux). Speeds do not seem to be limited by the VPN, they are limited by my craptacular internet access here. When I was using it in Canada, the VPN was a speed limiter but I think they have improved their network since then, I now get better speeds through the VPN over bad TH ISP, than I got in Canada with speedy ISP.

I wish I could remember the numbers, but there are tooo many beers between then and now! I can tell you, I use my VOIP phone over the VPN and the connection is usually very good.

There are also no quantity limits, I have d/l roughly 300G since June. That rate of D/L is probably pretty steady since I started useing them. Never a peep out of PIA.

+1 on StrongVPN for just over a dollar a week it's great value and you can choose from multiple server locations.

No significant issues with speed.

Last night i downloaded Tunnel Bear, scanned it,and tried to install it,

it was at about 50 % installed when a pop up said, cannot install as i

am installing something else ?, which i was not.tried to install it again

after a re boot, would not open this time, then i could not get any

connection out.

Had to do a system restore,to get everything back to normal, which

worked,i have used other VPN s no problem, don't think i will try to install

Tunnel Bear again.

Witopia users,

Do you find that witopia hangs once a day, every day, at the same time? That's been happening to me. Currently, it happens at 1:17 AM. DNS name resolution stops. My router watchdog detects it, reboots the router, and it's good for another day. Annoying though.

Yes, I have noticed Witopia hangs sometimes. I don't keep it connected all the time, so I can't say if it is consistent.

I have configured my dd-wrt router as the openvpn client so that our whole network is on the vpn. Works great, except for the daily fail of name resolution. However, I check frequently to see where my ip is located and on one occasion it persistently showed Jiangsu, China even though I had configured Los Angeles. Don't know if Chinese hackers hijacked me or witopia or what. Had to configure it to another witopia location to shake the Chinese.

No shared vpn can be as good as dedicated vpn.

Installing openvpn access server on 5$ / month digitalocean vps is very easy (they have tutorials)

Yes you can't switch location with one click, but if speed and security is what matters to you, nothing can beat dedicated vpn.

Been using Invisible VPN for about a year without any issues. For the plan with 12 US servers and 2 Canadian you pay $37 a year.

I always get full speeds with their servers too.

If you're doing financial trading, it shouldn't be an issue. If you're pulling torrents or downloading movies, perhaps it might be an issue. Better to go to the website and read the Ts and Cs…

I have various set ups like this to ensure I get data to where it needs to be regardless of where I am in the world and regardless of whether or not the regime in power is blocking access to certain sites.

I use ExpressVPN for Banking, Ebay and PayPal

No problems and no loose of speed.

Have used the free ones but slowed my system so much it made it unusable.

I've used; overplay, ukproxyserver, currently using StrongVPN (again). I've never found much difference between them, I like the current $55/yr deal from strongVPN
