Former USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev ‘fighting for life’ in hospital

SYDNEY: -- FORMER Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, 83, has been hospitalised but is determined to fight for his life, Russian press agencies report.

“My state of health has been moderate for a week and today I am in hospital. My health is deteriorating,” Gorbachev was cited as saying by Ria Novosti agency.

“I’m hooked up to a monitor,” he added, without saying where or why he was hospitalised.

“You know my character. I am determined to fight for my life,” he told Interfax news agency.

The last leader of the Soviet Union was hospitalised in June 2013 for a general check-up.

The Nobel Peace laureate has in recent years appeared tired during public appearances.

He is diabetic, according to media reports.

Gorbachev became Soviet leader in 1985 and instituted the sweeping political and economic reforms that became known as glasnost (“openness”) and “perestroika” (rebuilding).

In a former life I had the pleasure to welcome Mr Gorbachev and his lovely Raisa wife to a book signing in London. Mr Gorbachev spoke little or no English but his wife did and she was very interested in the history of the building in which the book signing was taking place. My PR team wanted to take a picture of Mr Gorbachev and myself on his arrival but with a sweep of his hand he pronounced a definite 'No' and slightly concerned we had committed a PR faux pax proceeded into the building to continue the book signing.

On the first floor landing of the building we had a very large painting of our Queen, Queen Elizabeth and as we climbed the stairs and the painting came into view, he turned to me and in broken English said 'Now photograph' which we duly did under the portrait of the Queen. He or one of his aides had clearly done their research.

The guy that banged his shoe and said Russia would bury the USA? Soon his country will bury him. just another evil politician.

amse, did I misread the name, or are you remiss in your recollection of history? Was it Nikita Khrushchev or Mikhail Gorbachev?

Mikhail Gorbachev 'ashamed' of Vladimir Putin Mikhail Gorbachev has launched a withering personal attack on Vladimir Putin on the eve of a giant anti-Kremlin protest in Moscow, saying he is ashamed of the Russian prime minister.

Sir Amse, there is an old latin proverb: si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses or translated in English means "If you had kept your silence, you would have stayed a philosopher"

Although Margret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan get all the credit for ending the cold war, without Gorbachev it would have taken for ever maybe. He had the courage to tell the East Germans they were on their own and that led, as we know, to the Berlin Wall coming down etc. He deserves more credit than he has received over the years. I understand, that he was a bit like Mrs Thatcher, in that he was admired abroad more than in his own country. ( I know Mrs T had many admirers in the UK but also many haters - if you like)

I also think that Khrushchev wasn't so bad, under the façade of the shoe thumping etc. He was a peasant who rose through the ranks and still retained a lot of simple basics. Shame that poster got them mixed up and, before he points to the Cuban missile crisis, at least Mr K had the balls to accept Kennedy's offer in the face of his more militant members of the communist inner circle, who were responsible for the deployment of the missiles in the first place. Scary time for many of us eh.............. facepalm.gif.pagespeed.ce.EuN79TyYk_.giffacepalm.gif.pagespeed.ce.EuN79TyYk_.gif

Hope Gorby hangs on.

I remember old Gobblechops. The West liked him with a vengeance, your ordinary Russian not so much. Still, nobody with any generosity of spirit wishes poor health on anyone.

He is the one that insisted on ending "star wars" while he installed SS20 missiles pointing at European cities. He went crying to Margaret when he was outgunned by Ronald. He was not a peace maker but a loser and a sore one at that.

Try reading the book 'We Come Unseen', you may learn a few things.

I like Gorbachev because he brought out the human side of communism. Before him all we got from Soviet Presidents was,"Neit.neit.neit! At least he would listen and talk to people. But when I reminded my Russian girlfriend of this she replied angrily, "He broke up the Soviet Union!" to which I replied, "And the Berlin wall."

Few Russians will mourn him...wai.gif

I haven't spoken to all 143 + million of them, so I can't comment with such certainty.

Wish him a speedy recovery. One of the greatest ever World leaders. I grew up during the Regan, Thatcher, Gorbachev golden years that heralded the end of the cold war. Shame present leaders are unable to learn from history.

I believe you are confusing him with another Soviet leader, I don't think it was Gorbachev who was the shoe banger.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think you've got it incorrect.

... without Gorbachev it would have taken for ever maybe.

"For ever". Gosh, you mean the old Russian Empire (aka. the Soviet Union) would still be around? Rather than, say its reincarnation under Vlad?

One of the mysteries of life is that, all we learn from history is that we DO NOT learn from history (unfortunately). And I agree with your comment about present leaders.

I doubt that you know anything about history, that's the guy who destroyed everything. The only nation who may aploud him is america...
