A group of Redshirt activists dined near Democracy monument to commemorate the 1973 student uprising on 14 October.

BANGKOK — Dozens of police officers surrounded Democracy Monument last night to prevent a group of Redshirt supporters from picnicking on the monument's steps.

The Redshirts originally planned to hold a laab (northeastern-style pork salad) picnic at the historic site on Ratchadamnoen Avenue to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the student uprising against military rule in 1973.

But the group decided to change their plans and dine at a restaurant opposite the monument after dozens of police officers arrived at the scene.

"We are here today to have dinner and reminisce about the old days," said Arnon Nampha, a lawyer who organised the dinner and has represented many Redshirts and lese majeste suspects in trial.

"Forty-one years ago, the student movement fought for democracy and asked for a constitution," he said. "Today, we are back to that past. There's no permanent constitution, no election, and we don't know when those things will return."

Arnon said he organised the dinner party to insist on people's right to enjoy their lives normally under the current "stressful situation." He said his group had no intention of engaging in any political activities or protests.

"We just invited people to join us for dinner," Arnon said. "We have no demand or message for the NCPO [an acronym for the junta's National Council for Peace and Order]. We have no agenda."

Hmm, didn't the reds say they were just coming down for a rally in 2010 and would then go home?

However once they arrived they decided to occupy the centre of the city.

I could be wrong of course........

It's not the first time the UDD attempts to abuse the memory of the 1973 students' uprising, nothing to do with democratic opposition, no more militia on the streets, no more violence! But why just block them, why no ID control, to record the guys present, ...to compare the list with the next time, and so on? (I guess it could be interesting to see where these people come from and what they do for a living, and it could show some of those are oddly present at many of these 'events', maybe even have an arrest warrant with their name on, or were featured on inglorious pictures from 2010...)

i am pretty sure the guy on the right is the same guy who has been arrested for reading 1984 the Orwell book

http://www.chiangmaicitynews.com/news.php?id=4103

When you'd be right, it would show the guy is indeeed a 'red shirt', and that he also was when he was 'reading' G.O.'s 1984, how odd (not), in front of cameras, while wearing a white T-shirt, ...and also that this 'white movement' was not genuine and spontaneous, or about democracy, at all, as it pretended to be, but was linked to Thaksin and the 'red shirts', while those 'free Bangkok youth' were strongly denying it at the time! So then it would prove to have been yet another agitprop from the 'evil-man-abroad''s PR team, and in hindsight that the guy was rightly taken in, not for just reading a book in public... Once again: nothing is what it seems to be in the LOS.

So the "respect my vote" movement is just another part of Lord Voldemort na Dubai's evil plan to take over Thailand, eh? The "evil-man-abroad" is responsible for so much here - my goldfish died last week and I'm sure it was because of him, the bounder. Meanwhile, back in reality;

Referred to as the “White Shirts,” many members demonstrate their allegiance by meeting within parks where they hold candlelight vigils and support one another’s pursuance of a fair election on February 2nd as well as peace. They also share a common idea: They want elections held on the scheduled day just as Shinawatra has promised, but they also don’t want Shinawatra to remain in office.

“At these events there were people who hated the Red Shirts but who didn’t like the Yellow Shirts,” Watinee Chaithirasakul, a White-Shirt activist told Huffington Post – referring to government supporters and anti-government protestors. “People like this do exist. And these people in the middle ground are trying to find some place to stand in society.”

Government protestors demand Shinawatra step down, throw away elections, and wish to appoint a “People’s Council.” Meanwhile, the White Shirt Movement remain in favor of democracy, not an appointed council.

Did you ever think your red leaders and red activities might have generated the current situation?

Arnon said he organised the dinner party to insist on people's right to enjoy their lives normally under the current "stressful situation." He said his group had no intention of engaging in any political activities or protests.

Sorry, don't believe you.

Doesn't take much to get the posters backing the excisting feudal system started on their usual mantras!!coffee1.gif.pagespeed.ce.Ymlsr09gMJ.gif width=32 alt=coffee1.gif>

So tell specifically how the red leaders (thugs), the udd, their paymaster et all actually contributed to building solid democracy.

Give one example of the red thugs, the udd, their paymaster talking publically about the value of actual democracy.

One example of the same characters talking publically and with credibility about the important pillars of democracy.

One example of the same characters talking publically about the need for and the mechanisms to protect those pillars.

One example of an speech / action by the same characters to strongly encourage their followers to embrace real democracy

Proof that the red shirt democracy schools actually taught the above and without bias.

Is that you djjamie?

No it's not djjamie.

But fabie, your so knowledgeable about the red movement, why don't respond to my points?

Or perhaps you can't, because there are no answers or examples. None at all.

Slowly, slowly...step by step the public are becoming more and more emboldened.

Beware, the clock is ticking Generals and the hour is approaching.

Don't believe you, polls indicate otherwise.

The recent talk in my Thai circles is around 'give the general and his team 5 to 10 years to

ensure their is real change and it's locked into place'.

What polls?

Ridiculous NIDA polls?

Whatever ones view of the coup, everyday it is becoming more and more clear that the good General is most certainly not a natural when it comes to politics.

Very hard to see the current situation remaining stable for a year let alone 5 to 10.

Slowly, slowly...

There is no more red or yellow shirt movements, they are banned forever. That's why we have military control now to stop this vicious cycle. Unity and patriotism is the PM's goal, this is needed to stabilize Thailand, make it strong, ready for next years ASEAN Community.
