Dead Briton in Phuket does not have Ebola virus

PHUKET: -- The Briton who arrived in Phuket from Nigeria on October and died in his condominium room from unknown causes on October 23 has been cleared of Ebola infection.

Dr Apichai Mongkol, director-general of Medical Science Department, said today that laboratorial tests of the tissues taken from the victim’s body did not find any trace of Ebola virus.

Meanwhile, public health officials in Trat province placed a 47-year Australian tourist under watch for 21 days after it was discovered that he left Congo on October 15 and arrived in Bangkok two days afterward.

The officials, however, said that the Australian was fine and did not fall sick but it was necessary to keep him under watch for 21 days as of the day he left Congo as part of the precautionary protocol.

Dr Nopparat Vasuthada, the public health chief in Trat, has notified Trat provincial hospital and the other health offices to make preparations to look after tourists who arrived from Ebola-affected countries.

He,however, assured that there is no need to panic here because there has not been an Ebola infection case.

For a minute there, I thought the Thai authorities were going to tell the truth.

Glad to hear he didn't have ebola. Now how about those "unknown causes" that he died from. Any luck with that?

Tat doesn't matter. Most people are only frightened of dying from Ebola. They are more than happy to die from any other cause, especially cancer and heart disease, which the majority of people are actively trying to get.

PHUKET: -- Laboratory results on tissues of a British man who died in his room in Phuket after returning from Nigeria showed no signs of the deadly Ebola disease.

Dr Thiravat Hemachudha, director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training on Viral Zoonoses, said yesterday that separate tissue tests by German and Chinese appliance equipment confirmed the results.

But the result is still in doubt as WHO's standards require a test of the suspect's blood.

"However, the foreigner was already dead for a few days so we are not sure about the result. I will consult with the Disease Control Department and virology experts on the matter," he said.

The British man arrived in Phuket from Lagos early this month while the country was declared free of the virus last week.

Not now that he has been cremated.......

Thailand loves these epidemic panics.

Perhaps it is a chance for the govt. depts. that rarely get a chance to be heard to dominate the headlines for a week or so. Here it is the Medical Science Dept. Thai senior officials love a bit of strutting in front of the camera.

Who remembers swine flu and bird flu. They went slightly bonkers then too, making over the top pronouncements. Always focussing on foreigners though. I would like to see them quarantine some Thais. I bet they wouldn't dare.

Is there a cover up going on here?

Just read in the Bangkok Post today that the victim's room has been disinfected and that 21 people he came into contact with are being closely monitored for 21 days.

Why all this if it wasn't Ebola?
