WASHINGTON: -- The Republican Party has taken control of the Senate in the US mid-term elections, increasing their power in the final years of President Barack Obama's presidency.

After gains in Arkansas, Montana, South Dakota, West Virginia and Colorado, North Carolina clinched victory.

Mitch McConnell will become the Senate majority leader.

According to AP news agency, the party is also set to increase its majority in the lower House of Representatives.

While I share your sentiments, I've come to the conclusion that the concept of elected officials representing the best interests of those who elected them or the nation as a whole ( in either major party) is just a fable from the past. Once elected the only motivation for most of them is to toe the party line and to do whatever it takes to get re-elected the next time around ... which usually means keeping the wealthy donors happy.

I voted absentee in Illinois and for quite a few offices there was only one candidate ... ah, democracy in action.

The elections may be a pseudo-democratic activity ( usually you only get a choice between "Idiot A" or "Idiot B" ), but the consequences have little to do with responsible governance.

The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.

And it's probably time to spend another trillion dollars on a new or expanded war or two.

Which is quite meaningless as GDP includes government spending.

So what good is a chart that shows a lower deficit as a share of the GDP which got its number by

incredible amounts of govt spending/debt creation?

Better to look at the increase in National debt these last 6 years as an indicator

The BBC reported that this was the most expensive election in American history and 55% was funded by "Dark Money". Any time money is given to a politician to influence legislation it is a bribe under any guise.The American law makers have legalized corruption and bribes in the form of campaign contributions. When an American senator or congressman leaves office, the campaign contributions in his war chest do not go to the public. Some of the money goes to the party and he keeps the rest.

A Republican majority in the US Congress may be a plus for Hillary Clinton if she runs for POTUS in 2016. First she will not have to defend Obama. Second, she won't have to distance herself from any Democratic congressional agendas. Third, she will benefit politically from any GOP legislative failures or passage of extreme laws by showing herslef to be a Centrist and Moderate. On the other hand because Hillary is not a public official, it will be difficult for the GOP to attack her politically. The GOP just may have made Hillary POTUS.

He is very likely going to be vetoing Republican bills for the next two years , instead of getting Harry Reid to refuse to bring them up for a vote, like he has been doing. Any way that you look at it, the Republican won a big victory today and they are far better off than they have been.

Yep, they won a big big today. So, control of the House and Senate. A conservative SCOTUS. Let's see what they do with this. They have two years to show results. Now no Democratic controlled Senate to block them.

Perhaps you forgot, a few years ago, if Romney had gained the presidency, he proposed he would increase military spending considerably - even if the military didn't want additional funds.
