BANGKOK, Nov 21 -- Transport Minister Prajin Juntong supports the plan of Airports of Thailand (AoT) to spend Bt93 billion on improving Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and Phuket airports to serve increasing traffic.

During his visit to AoT headquarters on Thursday, Air Chief Marshal Prajin said the plan was aimed at increasing public convenience.

For example, queuing time in front of immigration booths would be reduced from an hour to 15-30 minutes, the minister said.

Under the airport improvement project, Suvarnabhumi Airport would have another runway, renovation, higher cargo handling capacity and better safety systems for clients, ACM Prajin said.

AoT Chairman Prasong Poontaneat said Bt85 billion would be spent on Suvarnabhumi airport including Bt20 billion for a satellite terminal.

Don Mueang Airport improvements will cost Bt3 billion to raise its passenger-handling capacity to 30 million annually.

Terminal construction at Phuket Airport is estimated at Bt5 billion.

AoT must borrow to fund part of the investment.

Meanwhile, it was calculating a budget to improve duty-free zones at airports to attract travelers, Mr Prasong said. (MCOT online news)

These need to be upgraded or you fall into the airports trap of being left totally behind like Australia's majors who are now spending big time to catch up , one of the best examples of good management is Singapore , never loose sight of the fact that airports are the first point of contact for international guests to Thailand ,first impressions are everything, good management never killed a tourist , a bad experience will. coffee1.gif

Do the math... 25 million tourist plus Thais traveling into Thailand pay 700 Baht Airport tax. Question 1: What is being done with +500 million US$ annual revenues? Easy payback. The new airport has been open for 8 years thus its already paid for smile.png

I come to suspect that the powers that be build those airports with lots of short coming so they

can send hundreds of billions in upgrades later on giving chance to many cronies to get

on the caper, the case with DM some years back, after seeing that they have just spent

billions and than they shut it down..

Easily fixed. Lower tourist arrivals have this sorted already so next they will say IT HAS WORKED.

hmmmmm
