New laptop without operating system

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am in Roiet and need to buy a new laptop. Looking around in Robinson's, Big C, Lotus and the smaller shops there appears to be some very competitively priced machines - However they do not have an operating system preloaded.

This may be good news as I prefer Windows 7 but can anyone tell me where I can buy a legitimate licences copy of Windows 7, or perhaps make a different recommendation.

Posted from my phone using predictive text, please excuse any spelling or grammatical errors.

Depending on the shop, they will sell Windows 7. I bought a new laptop, from Advance, and they sold me Windows 8.1 and pre installed it. I could have bought Windows 7 instead.

How much did they charge you for windows? If it was any less than 3000 baht then likely a copy.

You can get original windows, with 2 keys, here http://www.advice.co.th/.

Most towns should have a branch.

Advice seem to be the best shops for all sorts of computer parts. I've tried two shops in two different provinces and was always satisfied with their service.

You might consider a visit to a shop, if there's one near you.

Sorry it was at Advice I got mine, and it was not a copy, somewhere around ฿4,000 to ฿5,000, if I remember correctly.

That's good. You should probably have got 2 keys for that, meaning you can load it onto 2 different computers.

Always better to go legit. Keeps the viruses away.

Do they ship physical media (DVD) or just the licenses key?

Otherwise you can legally download a DVD image (100% genuine) and buy a license about anywhere in the world probably without any physical shipment.

Downloads are bigger than 2 GB (up to more than 3), so high speed internet access is necessary.

Burn the image to DVD and there you are.

(assuming the new laptop has a DBD drive, otherwise its a bit more complicated via USB stick)

A couple of years ago when the Missus wanted a laptop she found a Samsung that fit the bill at Big C. When I asked if it came with a windows DVD start up copy we were told all their operating systems had to be loaded and they only had one copy of the disc.

Other than a legal reason what is wrong with a pirate or a dealer version of Windows?

A dealer or a pirate version is also something different, a dealer version should a legit version, but I am also not sure in which context you wrote dealer version.

But the difference between a pirate version and legit version, would be a- dont know what programs have been used to make it a legit version (could well be malware / virus) b- in case of a key it could be that from 1 minute to the next microsoft withdraws the key and you will be with a version that starts nagging it isn't legit c- most pirated versions will not receive updates which are necessary to keep your computer protected.

It's completely up 2 u which version you choose, but also be prepared for the consequences.

If you buy Windows 8.1 look close at the package to be sure that it is not an upgrade only version.

i made the mistake of not looking when I bought 8.1 (2500 baht) to change over from Linux on a all in one computer I have. But luckily I got a helpful rep on chat with Microsoft service that fixed it for me by doing some magic with a remote connection to the computer.

I strongly advise you to not buy Windows 7 but buy Windows 8. Windows 7 reaches the end of its support life in a couple of weeks and updates other than strictly safety ones will no longer be available.

Can you quote a source for this ?

Thanks

How could that be? They continued updating XP until around a year ago. They are gonna cut off 7 updates this soon? I doubt it....

Mainstream support for Windows 7 ceases on 13th Jan 2015.

Too many sources available to list, 'Google is your friend'.

There are two different milestones.

In 2015 they will stop to do upgrades, new features, supporting new hardware (types) etc.

Security updates will be done until at least* January 14, 2020.

If you have a existing/older system that is well supported by Windows 7, then there is absolutely no reason to panic.

Windows 7 is and will be the most used Windows OS for a long time (whether MS likes it or not).

Of course they want you to spend money on a new system.

For the concrete case of a "new laptop" on the other hand, it might be wise to rethink and eat the Win 8 crow.

* at least: time will tell whether they can force that date

PC wholesalers here have been selling 'licence only' versions for a while. They provide the label for about AUD90 for Win 7 Home & the seller/store installs from their disk. A copy of that disk can then be given to the customer as they have the label.

No different to what the big names have been doing for years - all installed & you make your recovery disk.

I have a supply of the labels for Win 7 HP - it can be used for 32 or 64 bit versions - if anyone is interested.

Here're my 5 baht to it. One of my responsibilities at my former, but also at my current school is to deal with the pirated software which computer shops had put on.

Yes, it can happen that a so called ":genuine" machine all in a sudden shows that it's a copy, a pirated version. But I found my own way to keep them genuine, receive all my needed updates and there's no difference to a genuine version.

The updates don't necessarily protect your computer. Even when you're using Windows Defender, you'll have to have a good Anti virus System, like Kaspersky.

And it's just not true that more Anti Malware and other programs make your machine faster.

Please be aware that I'm talking about computers at school and do not invite people to do illegal things.

I'm using pirated software at schools now for 10 years and never had a bigger problem to keep them running with updates.

But to get to your question. As another poster has already mentioned, you can download Windows 7, or 8 completely legal, buy your key from Microsoft and have all legal.
