PM not happy with road accident statistics

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha is not happy with the road accident statistics during the New Year’s festival even though the accidents have dropped by 40 percent compared to the figures last year.

He said on Tuesday that he wanted officials concerned to find out the causes of the accidents instead of just the statistics of road accidents and accident victims.

Admitting that most accidents stemmed from drunk driving, the prime minister pointed out the need to work out necessary measures to prevent accidents from happening.

He, however, thanked all officials concerned for their efforts to provide conveniences to New Year’s revellers so that they could travel safely during the festival. He also offered his condolences to the families of the road accident victims.

He said that the accidents this year should serve a lesson for motorists to be more cautious in driving.

Buses need to stop being neglected and the bus system should be made up to par with the BTS system in terms of quality and reliability. Free rides should also be given on festive days or when there is expected to be a lot of partying and drinking.

Another thing that could be done is to legalize other drugs such as marijuana, mushrooms etc which would take a lot away from the alcohol consumption and since these drugs don't alter your train of thought to do dangerous things, it should in theory help cut down the accident rate.

Instead of providing food and drink how about enforcing basic road laws?

20 odd dead over six months results in a coup, but 300 odd dead in a week means, I'm disappointed but well done in providing food and drink!

But then again...

excess speed for road conditions, vehicle condition/load and driver capability are contributors that could be approached fairly easiely, by reducing speed limits to 100kph. then monitor speeds and write tickets/fines for amounts that hurt the wallet 2 to 5000 baht may get the attention of a few.

Even the PM believes accidents only happen during the '7dangerous days' 26000 deaths a year Mr PM! Now get a megaphone and shout that out during your next press conference. Then come up with a year long strategy to reduce the wanton loss of life.

It's easy.. recind all Thai Driving licences..Everyone to attend compulsory lessons to an international standard. All to be retested again to Euro/UK/Aus or US standard in a manual car. Autos prohibited until 5 yrs of accident free driving of manual trans completed.

Only about 20% (if that) will pass the test (ever) so not only solve accident problem but congestion problem too...

I like that Prayut actually talks about these things. Most leaders don't.

well at least the PM acknowledged the horrrific accident/death rate, thats more than can be said for many past PMs. give the man a chance, he does appear to have the good of the country and its people at heart and reportably has support of some influential individuals.

That in itself is an improvement over what was puttering around before with their hands in everyones wallet except their own.

No way... they will drive anyway. Just like now!

Road Accident deaths are so high because Thais obey no traffic laws whatsoever. They do what they want when they want. They have no comprehension of what danger is. Police do not contribute to road safety at all. Therefore there is no "Road Safety". Buses Coaches and the like will go on crashing, turning over, bla bla bla. Maintenance issues, all too much to manage. So the statistics are overwhelming, and will go on increasing. If Road Safety could be achieved, which it cannot, would take minimum of 2 decades.

Maybe he could start with enforcing the BIB to do their job.

For example this evenin I left Big C on Pattaya Klang and at the traffic lights were two coppers standing outside their police box.

Every minute at least 10.000 Baht in traffic fines was passing them, without any action taken.

On road #36 in Pattaya, which is a major 6 driving lane highway, at one particular u-turn every day at least 100 tour buse full of tourist go against traffic flow for a stretch of about 50 meters, because otherwise they need to take the next u-turn which is 2 km down the road.

Why do think bus travel should be free, because it's so expensive people are deterred from using it?

Unbelievable claptrap.

Since LOS was offically named the second most dangerous country in the world to drive in for the second year in a row, glad to see this problem has finally caught the general's attention. However, there is no need for an expensive, time-consuming etudy. A brief tour of Thai motorways will reveal that:

1. Most Thai motorists have no knowledge or respect for basics of road safety. If anyone needs a few weeks of re-education, it is the Thai drivers - both licensed and unlicensed.

2. A similar re-education in Enforcement of Traffic Laws 101 is urgently needed for the RTP, who now have other priorities.

Will we ever see a massive re-education campaign of this kind? Don't hold your breath!

Drivers with absolutely no training , no regard for the law and no respect for life.

A useless police forces and no rescue service.

Those are the main factors.
