It seems that he crossed the line by mocking and showing footage of the killing of U.S. journalist James Foley and expressing admiration for the perpetrator of the kosher supermarket shooting in Paris. There are hate speech laws in France that he has apparently broken.

I do have some sympathy for the anything goes stance, seeing as exceptions based on incitement to racial or religious hatred can be subjective. Still to eulogize the murderer of Jewish deli customers seems to me far more distasteful than say the prosecution of an Austrian housewife called Elizabeth Sabovitch-Wolf for accurately stating Mohammad consummated his Marriage to Aisha when she was nine. Truth was not a defense in that case. Still I somehow doubt anyone will put a cap in his head for his remark.

Your point boils down to an argument for universal relativism. You might be able to argue hypocrisy if other religions and cultures were to be offered the same leeway in the Muslim world as Islam is in the West. Indisputably this is not the case, therefore the only consistent solution is each to their own. If any of our would be equivalence fans would take issue with Western civilization being far superior in every way to that of Islamic cultures (and desire no modification from them) they can always emigrate, as goes IMHO for all Muslims who refuse to recognize the authority of Western laws and cultural norms. The holocaust is a part of European historical baggage, if certain laws are enacted as a consequence of that it is a matter for individual governments to decide on, as are laws governing free speech, in Thailand we accept the reality of lese Majesty laws whatever we may privately think of them, even the non assimilating expats in Pattaya.

If you are from the same ethnic group you're OK and free to do whatever you like until you compete with other people's business (drugs, weapons, etc.)

However, for the still existing indigenous majority members, these areas are strictly no go, otherwise they'll risk their life.
