Understanding urged in South
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- THE SOUTHERN violence continues to be severe because the conflict of thoughts has not been solved, so police have to be understanding and learn about the ways of life, needs and wants of the locals as well as promote people's participation, said Pol Lt-General Anurut Krisanakaraket, commander of the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre.

"I'll open a centre to gather complaints so I can look them up. I think that if an area no longer has any more bombing or violent attacks, I will propose that the state of emergency be lifted for that area," he told The Nation.

The region has experienced fighting and retaliatory attacks because Thai security officers' search operations, specialised implementation of the law and issuance of arrest warrants for those engaged in ideological battles in the past decade has fostered a sense of injustice in people's minds, he said.

"The violence hasn't been reduced because we haven't tackled it at the ideology level. We didn't let them see that there is justice.

"I offer my apologies to people because the region has suffered violence and people feel they don't get justice. So I'd like the chance to create justice," he said.

Anurut landed this job last October and since then has been visiting people and checking in on police operations. He wrote an apology to residents of the deep South via the police website.

The next step is to promote public participation in solving problems and expressing opinions and needs for public safety, criminal procedures and public services, he said.

The deep South is not a war zone and police are there to serve the public, not to kill anyone for no reason, he said. The local identity and way of life should be respected, Anurut argued. "These days people should not use violence because if any officer used violence without reason, he wouldn't be able to explain it to society, so he would be removed or reassigned to another task rather than any close to the public," he said.

You want to solve the problem eradicate ALL the Southern scum from Thai Lands.....there NEVER will be peace as long as your a non-believer of their cult.

MAYBE I AM THICK BETWEEN THE EARS, BUT THIS SEEMS TO HAVE AN UNDER TONE OF ONE RELIGION VS ANOTHER AND THE VIOLENCE ERUPTS WHEN ONE ETHNIC GROUP DOES NOT LIKE WHAT THE OTHER IS DOING. IS THIS CLOSE TO THE TRUTH WITHOUT GETTING TOO SPECIFIC AND CLLING NAMES. IF THIS IS A RELIGIOUS WAR, WHY IS IT NOT BEING CALLED A RELIGIOUS WAR?.

THIS SOUNDS A BIT LIKE ONE POTENTIAL US PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WHO WANTS AMERICA TO GET FRIENDLY AND COZY WITH THEIR ENEMY AND TO UNDERSTAND THEIR WAY OF THINKING, ALL THE WHILE THIS ENEMY WANTS NOTHING MORE THAN TO DESTROY THE GREAT SATAN. ARE THERE SIMILAR GROUPS IN SOUTHERN THAILAND WHO WANT TO CHANGE THAILAND INTO SOMETHING OTHER THAN A PEACE LOVING BUDDHIST COUNTRY? I AM JUST ASKING QUESTIONS???

Another day, another random, rambling speech with no real understanding of the problems or how to address them.

It's ok, he will be gone in another 9 months to be replaced by an equally inept who makes noise but does nothing.

...meanwhile the violence continues.

carry on.

They weren't "Thai lands" to begin with ...they were Muslim lands. If you don't understand the problem, you cannot find the solution.

A little background research might help your understanding. About 90% of the population in "South" Thailand is Muslim and their land was originally part of a caliphate before Thailand annexed it.

PS: you are "shouting" when you use CAPS.

Bigots never want to understand.

It involves intelligent thought.

The poster you replied to is clearly incapable of thinking beyond their hate.

What difference does it make what I think?

My comment is simply a statement on the ineptitude of the current lackie and all his predecessors to understand, commit to solving and actually do something meaningful to solve the problem in the South.

There is no commitment, just rhetoric. It's tiring and frustrating to see the continual deaths while the Generals in Bangkok enjoy playing golf at the Turf Club and gin and tonics at 5pm.

Hopless...unless you disagree?

Your hate is blinding you.

From the BBC today in a separate story, but applicable here.

"Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Sunni Islam's leading centre of learning, called the attack "criminal" and said "Islam denounces any violence".

That is how rational people think. Try it out sometime.

I have been told that a huge part of the problem in the south is that the people are Muslim and very upset that their children are forced to follow the Buddhist ways of Thailand and required to even recite Buddhist prayers in school like schools in the rest of Thailand.

This is why so much of the violence is aimed at schools and teachers.

Would yo be upset if your children were forced to worship a religion you did not believe in??

I would!

Buddhism is a non violent belief.

Maybe it would be a good idea not to force prayer in the schools if it would reduce the violence???

P.S. I am a Buddhist.

Beliefs can be learned...but should never be forced on people...

Like Christians have done all over the world!

PEACE!
