British national Stephen Boothroyd, aged 47, was riding his motorbike near the Tuesday market in south Pattaya on Soi Buakhow with his girlfriend as pillion passenger at around 10 o’clock in the morning when two men on a motorbike performed the traditional snatch and grab of the prominent gold necklace hanging around Mr Boothroyd’s neck.

The Britisher went to the Soi 9 police station and reported the incident and he and his girlfriend were able to give a reasonable description of the thieves. Local police were quickly alerted and investigating officers were able to make a quick arrest of the alleged culprits when they were called to a gold shop nearby the Wat Chai Mongkol temple on south Pattaya Road. Here they discovered a 24 year old Thai man and a 16 year old Thai youth in the process of trying to sell the gold necklace.

The youngest of the pair claimed the necklace was a present from his mother, so police made him call his mother. When she arrived they were all taken to the police station for questioning. When Mr Boothroyd arrived he was able to show a mark on his neck caused by the snatching as well as identify the necklace concerned.

Police were certain the two Thais they had in custody were indeed the culprits and that the mother was telling lies. A court will soon determine their overall fate.

Good news,,

To be honest I have only had good contact with Thai police. Once we were almost ran over by a cement truck and from the minute we came in to the police station we were helped with everything and I mean everything. Similar situations have occurred and the same thing there. Maybe I am lucky but I have never been harrassed by any policemen in Thailand but I have in Sweden though. Isnt that weird??

Well anyway good thing that they are acting fast...Hats off :o

Some people never learn. I know Thais that don't wear their gold, or at least don't wear it "prominently". It's like a flashing neon sign that says "Rob Me" !

Good work. Kudos to the shop clerk for alerting the police. Probably realized that any time some poor looking Thai guy tries to pawn a broken necklace, it probably came from the neck of someone else ! :o

Oh dear what a stupid man, some people never learn from other peoples mistakes

Now the youths do a short stretch in the nick and come out bearing a grudge.

Didn't a similar happen to Steven Parkinson

Time to move to Phuket or somewhere

Englishman Steve Parkinson delivered swift justice to a 16-year-old thief after the youth and another man snatched his 5 baht-weight gold necklace. Parkinson gave chase on his Honda Phantom and rammed the pair near the Grand Hall market in Soi Bua Khao in the early hours of August 21.

Police arrived on the scene to find Parkinson detaining the young criminal in a headlock. Parkinson told police that the 16 year old, identified only as Wallop, and another man tore the gold chain from his neck as he was waiting to turn. Undeterred, Parkinson gave chase and rammed the pair on the bike. Officers searched the youth’s pocket to find the chain, complete with three Buddhist amulets, and took him to Soi 9 for questioning.

Back at the station, police brought in Mawee Kaewlue, 19, who was suspected to have taken part in the theft. However, Mawee said that the bike was his and that the 16 year old and an accomplice had stolen the bike at gunpoint. A quick check led officers to quickly remove Mawee’s handcuffs. They charged Wallop with two counts of theft and sent him to a holding cell pending judicial proceedings while police search for his accomplice.

English man shot dead in, what appears to be, a random armed robbery in Pong sub-district.

At 4.30 am on Wednesday, Police Sub-Lieutenant Choosak from Pattaya Police Station was called to the front of the Jeab Mini-mart in Pong sub-district after receiving information of a foreign man who had been fatally shot at the location. Police arrived and inspected the body of Mr. Steven Parkinson aged 47 from England. Witnesses mentioned that a total of four shots were heard but it appears that only two hit the intended target. Mr. Parkinson sustained two gun shot wounds to his face.

Details of the shooting were provided by Khun Sujira aged 32 who works at a bar on Walking Street. She claims that Mr. Parkinson took her from the bar and the pair left South Pattaya on his motorbike, a Blue Honda Phantom. They made their way to Soi Siam Country Club in Central Pattaya and drove along the road towards Pong sub-district, some 3kms from the Sukumvit Road. Four Thai men on two motorbikes approached the pair from behind and one of the passengers produced a gun and ordered Mr. Parkinson to stop. He decided not to comply with the shooters instructions and the shooter expelled four shots.

The bike fell to the ground and Khun Sujira realized that Mr. Parkinson was dead. The four men restrained Khun Sujira at this point and stole items of value from her and the dead man including a mobile phone, 1,500 Baht in cash and a necklace and ring. A total of 20,000 Baht’s worth of items were stolen from the woman along with other undisclosed items stolen from Mr. Parkinson as he lie dead on the street.

Police Lieutenant General Jongrak, the Region 2 Commander of Police was called in to oversee this serious case, and early on Wednesday Morning he spoke with a friend of the dead man Mr. David Cettevell and Mr. Parkinson’s girlfriend, Khun Siripon aged 24 who mentioned that she was currently living in a hotel and not with Mr. Parkinson because of problems in their relationship. No financial problems or anything else which could suggest a motive for the attack was revealed by the pair.

The Police General believes this case was a random act of armed theft and the crime was not pre-meditated but Police will investigate all possibilities as they urgently hunt for the gang of four men who committed this horrific crime. The British Embassy in Bangkok are also conducting their own independent investigation into this case and if we receive any updates to this story we will bring them to you here on Pattaya City News.

It's always good to hear when the police do a good job and when a crime is solved. I hope the victim learns a valuable lesson, but I hope the perpetrators learn an even more valuable one.

How does one identify a gold chain here in Thailand.

I think I need my initials engraving, small, but enough to say positively "Yes that is mine. Look here".

It is a good idea to have a photo of the chain plus any pra, as a back up.

What's a "chav"? :o

http://www.chavworld.co.uk/ :D

That is hysterical. Most of the tourist population of Pattaya are Chavs. Except the web site got the "Guidos" wrong. A Guido is an exaggerated Italian American. Kind of like he saw the Godfather and wanted to be like one of the stooges and a still be maintain his style of dress between Grease and the Fonz.

'chav' (slang) - a young person, often without a high level of education, who follows a particular fashion; Chavs usually wear designer labels including the chav favourite 'Burberry', and if they’re girls, very short skirts, large hoop earrings and stilettos.

CHAV: DEFINITION

Derived from Chatham in Kent, this term can be applied loosely to every culture with a nasty, thieving element. There are many variants of this creature but all are subject to the following commonalities:

Chavs are completely amoral, having never been subjected to right and wrong by their inattentive, uncaring and often absent parents.

Chavs are part Magpie, evidentially supported by their love of all things shiny, or as vaccuous, illiterate street-slang would say 'Bling'. They can be seen twokking from the Jewelry counter in Argos/Index.

Whatever their ethnic background, Chavs have a built-in affinity to hip-hop/R&B, even if they are inherently racist. They see their life as glamorous and cool.

Chavs are for the most part, extremely stupid. However, some of them render a form of low cunning, which can be misinterpreted as intelligence. However this is false. A Chav has no desire to better themself through honest means nor learn anything outside of car modification.

All chavs think that they are nails. Again, this is false. Sitting in a beaten up nova smoking lamberts does not precipitate a healthy body. The irony being that a Chav owns mainly sportswear, yet will only break a sweat if running from the police.

Chavs are incredibly fertile beasts, and are highly successful breeders. Where they come unstuck is having to look after the offspring which their 13 yr old drunken fumble produces. More often that not the child will grow to be a Chav, having received no more guidance on life than the parent.

Chavs have a fond love for cars, as well as a Vin Diesel fixation. Rather than buy a nice car to start with, a chav will spend all their dole and tax-free labouring cash on upgrading a 10 year old car with 200,000 miles on the clock. The end product will invariably be a luminous monstrosity with at least one serious collision to it's name.

So they sound like most other R Soles....but the victim of this crime cannot be put into this categaory........just an unfortunate victim of thieves....after all the chain he was wearing was very small....18 grms I believe. Although in retrospect he would probably wish he hadn`t worn it.
