Sick and can't make 90 report

Recommended Posts

I am due to make a 90 day report on Monday but have just have had a hip replacement and am not yet up to the hurley burley of the immigration office. If I turn up a couple of weeks late with a certificate from the surgeon will that be accepted by immigration or will I have to pay a fine?

Do not think a surgeons letter will help you. Immigration will ignore it same as they did with me.

My wife went on my behalf 35 days late .We had to pay the fine. Immigration were not interested what doctor wrote.

Elective surgery isn't a very good reason, when you can do it 15 days before, or by mail. I talked with a guy on crutches the other day, who had crashed the motorsai and had to have his leg screwed back together. Missed his renewal, went to immigration, they gave him 7 days.....then he got an official letter from the hospital, showed them that and he got 30 more.....now he gets to go to Vientianne. I remember when Senator Wilson was brought to the US Capitol on a gurney, after an emergency appendectomy. He then cast a deciding vote in the Senate.

Ten years ago they listened and allowed all the excuses including a doctors letter.

But I imagine as always the bent customers used up all the patience of the Departments and now it be on time or suffer the consequences.

That's right, they get tired of the excuses then end all exceptions, even for those with a good excuse.

It is not a bad excuse when you have been unexpectedly confined to bed for 3 weeks rather than a couple of days after the op.

The mail option is too late and there is no one I would impose on to brave immigration for me so I guess I just have to wear the fine. Mai pen rai.

Does anyone know what the fine is and does it grow the later you report.

Which was he doing, an extension of stay or the 90 day report?

THB2000 - pay someone and at least save some money.

But give the money to a friend not an agent, but then a friend would probably do it for nothing, it's not too difficult nor time consuming at the right time.

At least you have a legitimate excuse...I get sick just thinking about having to go to immigration again...always a stressful experience...

In Pattaya (Jomtien), no problem. A friend can take your passport with last notification paper, now no need for any other paperwork as they have it all on computer. If they did not enter it all on computer last time, you need photocopy passport page and departure card.

They do not want sick, crippled or aged people clogging up their system, and the new notification paper is computer generated!

Drag yourself to the next immigration office, I did it last week, I was very ill and I paid 1500 for overstay (500 /day). If you wait time to get better, you will pay more, if you can do, then do it otherwise send someone else on your behalf.

You have a one week grace period, and this can be done by mail. Look online for the instructions. Send a copy of your passport and the visa page. Color copy is probably better. Send EMS, and keep the receipt. Pretty easy deal, from what I hear.

Since you now know it's the case you don't have to be present for the 90 day report, maybe you can release some of your baht and pay an attendant nurse 500 THB to do the footwork for you.

It's an easy procedure. Very easy.

Saan -- it looks like you've received your answer, even though you may not like it. To summarize:

You're probably too late to mail in your report, since it's due on Monday. Besides, if you're too ill to deal with Immigration, how are you going to deal with making copies and going to the post office?

Apparently, there is no one in your life you can entrust with your passport, signed copies and signed copies of the form which can be downloaded from the internet: http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/base.php?page=download (it's the TM 47 form). Any third party can file the report for you.

Apparently your surgery was emergency surgery or else you could have submitted your 90 day report up to 15 days ahead of the due date.

So, since none of these options are attractive from what you're saying, then the answer to your question is that no, a doctor's letter isn't going to cause them to waive the fine for filing late, which will probably be 2000 baht. They have the authority to go as high as 5000 baht, but they only do that in really egregious cases, like when someone fails for file for years and years or when someone has a temper tantrum in the office. (I've seen it happen)

Thank you for your response Nancy.

Just a couple of points - there are people I would trust with my passport. My wife for one, but during the week she works for a government department 100 km away from Chiang Mai and is unable to attend immigration for me. There are also several friends whom I would implicitly trust but hesitate asking as they use a visa agent as they detest going to immigration themselves. It seemed unfair for me to ask them to go for me.

My surgery was not an emergency but elective but my illness after was not, otherwise I would have been able to attend immigration myself.

I can also promise you that I will not have a temper tantrum when I do next visit immigration. I have always admired the immigration officers' behavior under very trying circumstances and would in no way want to make their task more difficult.

As I said in an earlier post - mai pen rai.

Saan, I think this is the time to see who your real friends are don't you? Or even wife's friends or family?
