A stock photo of Pattaya, a beach town east of Bangkok known for its raucous nightlife and high rate of crimes against foreigners.

CHONBURI — A security guard and group of motorcyclists in the resort town of Pattaya reportedly beat a foreign tourist unconscious because of a "misunderstanding" last night.

Police received a report at around 11:30pm pm that a foreign tourist was assaulted outside of Honey Bar on Pattaya - Na Kluea Road. Upon arriving at the scene, rescue workers found an unconscious foreign man on the ground, with severe injuries to the head. The man, who is believed to be in his 30s, was sent to Banglamung Hospital.

According to witnesses, the victim spent the evening drinking at the bar and asked for his bill, which totaled 1,300 baht, at around 11:30pm. Witnesses say the foreigner gave the staff 600 baht and told them in English that he would withdraw the rest of the money from a nearby ATM.

They'll get quality tourists when they act like quality hosts.

For all of you wearing your rosé colored glasses, something like this may someday happen to you. In Thailand it is not a question of will something bad happen it is only a question of when.

Wow, these stories just keep piling up on a daily basis now ... and it's never 1 on 1 ... always 1 foreigner, multiple Thai's ... some of these "people" must have some real issues, cos this just isn't the side of "Thainess" that TAT wants to promote.

Thainess.

maybe the Thai tourism minister should take a stroll (on her own) down onto pattaya beach near Mikes Shopping at about 5pm, she could even try to take a nice video of the sea and beach and see what happens to her

Typical story really. One idiot maybe starts something he can't finish. The fragile egoed males are hovering in the background as their women carouse with other men then jump at the chance to vent a bit and beat a lone man into unconsciousness. No wonder their women work bars as they're clearly not man enough to satisfy them.

Just waiting for the apologists to start blaming the tourist......

An eyewitness reported that the mob kept kicking the head of the witness even after he lost conscience.

This is an attempted homicide. Hope they all will be held responsible.

Good luck for the victim!

Sure, against a wife, kid, or man in a wheelchair.

Of course overwhelming majority of Thai men are cowards. Never got the balls to do anything 1-1. Its with " associates, guns, knives or some other weapon!

try drinking in city bar anywhere round the world and then try to fob half the bill off.

not nice he got beat up but we only got half the story. there are some serious mouth merchants from the UK in pattay who think the world owes them a living and the locals they regard with utter disdain.

who knows he may have had it coming

It is a major problem when a large part of the Thai male population (in Pattaya) is just itching to get a chance to beat up a foreigner for any reason, or even no reason. We see this time and time again, and especially in this case. The fact that they take pleasure in beating people makes it an even bigger problem, as they do not stop when the "enemy" is down, they keep going till he is dead, or at least looks dead.

As this case was clearly "a misunderstanding", the guard will get a 500 baht fine, be back at "work" the next day, and that will be the end of it for him. The foreigner will be asked to pay the hospital bill, forget about damages and his ruined holiday, and likely also be asked to pay the remainder of his bar bill.

However, in any civilized country, which I am aware Thailand is not, both the guard and the motorbike taxi guys would be arrested, charged with attempted murder and imprisoned.

In any case, yet another of the 12 routes to Thainess has been discovered by an unfortunate tourist. I think this past week has already revealed all 12, but I am sure there are many more to come.

Of course overwhelming majority of Thai men are cowards. Never got the balls to do anything 1-1. Its with " associates, guns, knives or some other weapon!

To be fair, according to the article, the guard did first hit the oblivious foreigner, before he called for reinforcements.

I don't know where Honey Bar is but I won't be going there.

they will not even be fined

it was a misunderstanding !

can happen to everybody - nobody is perfect

my pen lie

Hope I see this report multiplied in the western media, tourists have to be prepared for thainess

Not that I usually spend more money than I have on me in a bar or any where for that matter but if I did after reading this I would ask one of the bar staff to walk with me to the ATM and then walk back with them to the bar so all staff can see I paid.

These Thai men are just foaming at the mouth to get a chance to beat a falang senseless. Doesn't take much, like a ticking time bomb. Shows you how much they really hate falangs.

The pot bellied man in the photo is actually a well paid actor. I seen him on tourist posters at many well known tourist destinations. Lucky guy.

What ever the story is even if some one does a runner half killing them can not be legal and certainly will not get them the money owed.

I hope the Bar owners and manger are prosecuted too, close the bar for 30 days, and make the bar owner pay the hospital bills and compensation, then hopefully all bar owners will wake up and realise that employing a brainless baboon on the door is not the best policy.

Honey Bar black listed unless I have enough for my drinks!

Go Thailand! Smash the Thainess into the non-believers. =D
