cheeryble Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 A friend yesterday told me of a place "about 7km north of Mae Rim on the right side of the main road going north". It sells mini-houses made up based on a metal frame (invisible) finished with painted Vivaboard (cement board) on the outside and plasterboard inside. Just small maybe one 5x4 metre room. I have seen few site offices etc made up like this and always thought it a bit naff. However the very experienced friend says he would definitely consider them nowadays and very economical. I am planning to build a little holiday cottage up north and was gong to use conventional build. I'm willing to take another look and see if they've improved the finish of these viva board structures nowadays....or if I could improve the finish myself. So basically I'm here to save a trip up that road and asking if anyone near there can take a few snaps so I get an idea what they have before I venture there. Lazy? Not really, just checking if someone can do this and save me going through that busy roadworks and all. Thanks!
LivinLOS Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I would consider one as a temporary storage building.. Been thinking about knocking a shed / workshop up on my land as I am failing to find a decent workshop to rent at a price I would pay.. Dont need much.. Sheet metal construction fine for my purpose.. Looked at shipping containers but silly prices.. Interested in what you find.
cheeryble Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 I saw something of this type on my way through Ban Tawai this morning. It was just what I have come to expect with the open ends of cut 4x2 steel visible, very visible joins in vivaboard sheets on the deck, cheapest laminate floor with a gap to the skirtings. Metal roof had no insulation which is essential not only for heat but for rain sound (extra important in CR which has near double the rain).......etc etc. However in principle if properly finished these things could I think be acceptable and apart from much less foundations and materials have a very big advantage..... I have been designing my chalet so far so I can add to it substantially if the place works out......extend the roof with "wings" and add to the sides. This is a pain with a masonry dwelling but is potentially very easy with a metal frame structure, just cut in, weld, and trim it all up. Walkways could likewise be just welded on when one knows more about what one needs from using the place. Add to that if things don't work out you could cut it in bite size lumps and to some extent sell it or move it. Again though I don't want to see one piece of metal visible nor do I want one piece of that artificial "wood siding" made out of cement board plank. For me any joins in boards have to be made completely invisible with trim or filling and finishing properly.
cheeryble Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 No civilised person would want this in their house but this sort of metal sheet may suit a workshop for you LivininLOS. It was reasonably stiff probably right for the job. 1
LivinLOS Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Yeah.. Then I just come into the problem of getting electrical supply on the land without tabien baan or building license.. All I need is a lockup / shed / workshop / man cave.. Really hard to find.. The few I found people seem to think are rentable for more than thai homes.. For a shed..
KonaRain Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Sounds aright to me.My Lady friend built a small house, 3.* x 9.0 meters with a covered Walkway. Our Thai Architect friend drew a vaulted ceiling design with a clear story, Which they would up covering with aforesaid plastic wood. And they plasterboarded the Vaulted ceiling! Auwe!! Metal beams and stucco were okay, though. Prefabbed bldg can be great..just think about ^^roof insulation.. I saw beautiful tile in Laos, but also right on Mae Rim, his card is sitting on my desk. A little gingerbread for Your little cabin. Like where I am right now, in Hawaii. At least I had electricity in LOS. LOL ? Aloha, good fun..
dave2 Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 re So basically I'm here to save a trip up that road and asking if anyone near there can take a few snaps are these the type of sheds / buildings you are talking about ? if yes i saw these at global house in may 13 perhaps they still sell them ? dave2 1

cheeryble Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 I guess they are the type Dave but not for me thanks. I actually went up to see the two buildings past Mae Rim yesterday but though better than some they didn't ring my bell. I am still thinking this type of structure might be good if the finish detail could be improved though and have started a thread if anyone interested....

KonaRain Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 Have You seen any shipping containers for around $2000?. Wondering what :silly prices: are like. My friend told me some aren't sea-ship worthy, and cost less. Otherwise 2 thou is about right.. Let me know..

At that price I would stack a couple for width and use them as a storage shed..
