junglechef Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 There use to be a place in Mae Jo that had a sign with a picture of crayfish but it's been taken down.. Don't know of they actually were selling crayfish but does anyone know if they are available here? Thanks, JC (p.s. cookin' Cajun if your wondering)
worgeordie Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 The Kings Project used to or maybe still do, raise and sell Crayfish, and I also read about a Cajun restaurant in Bangkok who also had a Crayfish farm.Bourbon Street I think it is called. Regards Worgeordie 1
CMKiwi Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 I've seen lobster in Makro but they are different to what we get in NZ. They look like a big Mantis Shrimp and no big claws so to speak of. They may be ok to use with Cajun cooking if nothing else is available.
Gonsalviz Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Crayfish are sold at Makro. Farm raised. Large body smaller tail. Blue and white in color.

Those are Fresh Water Shrimp Crayfish look like this I don't think that Mantis Shrimp wouldn't be as good as just substituting nice regular sea shrimp Thanks for contributing, always enjoyable to banter about food
CMKiwi Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Good picture and as they say it paints a thousand words. Also known as craw fish? Reminds me of Forest Gump. The ones I saw in Makro were totally different that your picture. The sign said rock lobster....go figure. I'll take a photo next time I see them. 1
tolsti Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 There's a thread running in the Farming forum http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/681592-breeding-crayfish/
junglechef Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 The pics of the Red Claw in that link would be used more like Lobster and it says the crayfish were 4" long and one would need to eat a large number of them, yes that's Crayfish, also known as crawfish, crawdads, freshwater lobsters, or mudbugs. I'm sure for what the Aussies do, throwing shrimp on the barbie and all that, they might be good but I'm doin' Cajun! Anyway I'm leaning toward doing a Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya and with a starter of Shrimp Cocktail, guess my memories of the Crawfish Boils in my backyard in New Orleans will just have to be that, sweet memories for now
