Air Force plane skids off runway at Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI: -- A Royal Thai Air Force plane skidded off the runway after one of its tyres blew up shortly after landing at Chiang Mai airport today.

The BT 67 plane has just completed a haze fighting mission over Chiang Mai when it returned to the airport.

Nobody was injured in the incident that happened at 09.45 am but the airport was ordered close to all commercial flights for 45 minutes to facilitate rescue teams to remove the aircraft and cleared the runway for safety train.

The front left tyre of the transport plane blew up when it touched the runway upon landing, according to Captain Chatinon Satanpatai, commander of the 41st Wing based in Chiang Mai.

There was no damage to the plane and it was later towed back for check after is burst tyre was replaced.

The airport resumed normal service an hour later.

Heck some skid - so fast it threw it up in the air again facepalm.gif

What caused the tyre to blow up?

Does it have a front left tyre?

Whats a safety train?

I was just wondering what makes an aeroplane slide sidewards ? Not any crosswinds lately . A blown tyre might slew the plane off the runway. No ice . I dont like reporters to cock up a story

Many questions asked by members here, mine is what is a haze fighting mission?

The aircraft pictured is a Casa 212 used for cloud seeding. This is the aircraft that had brake failure and ran into the grass a couple of weeks ago. The aircraft that shut the runway today was the BT67 (modernized DC3) and has been dropping water over the city for a couple of weeks. No idea why it popped a tyre but it is hot today 38'c, dodgy landing, wrong air pressure, mischievous spirits?

Now I'm a bit confused. Two nearly identical incidents in one day?
Or is the same story reported from a different angle?

If the plane was a DC-3 ot BT67, it's a tail dragger which explains two front tires. A tail dragger has the center of gravity behind the main wheels and thus the tendency to loop on landing, and thus the modern change to having the center of gravity ahead of the mains and then a nose wheel. A tail dragger is a bit like shooting an arrow backwards for stability.

It's easy to see why, if it blows a front tire, the tail would want to pass the nose, putting it into what's called a ground loop.

They've been dropping Mega-loads of water on the Bush fires. Singapore has also been generous enough to send a large Chopper and crew to assist, although I haven't seen any coverage of this on Thai TV News, which one would think might be appropriate as a way of showing our thanks to Singapore.

Thanks for the informative post. It is refreshing to see a positive, informative and civil post.
