Min. of Commerce to address the issue of expensive limes

BANGKOK, 21 April 2015, (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce has planned to distribute more limes to areas currently experiencing shortages, following the market price reaching a 12-month high of 9 baht apiece. The ministry said the price of limes is likely to increase further as demand continues to rise.

According to the latest survey in Bangkok and its vicinity, limes size 1 and 2 are now priced at around 8-9 baht, from the previous 6-7 baht. Limes size 3 and 4 are now 6-7 baht, a significant jump from the previous 4.50 baht.

The ministry stated that the wholesale price has also increased and expects it to rise further in the near future, thanks to lime harvests damaged by severe drought.

For the moment, the ministry has been planning to directly distribute limes from agricultural producers to high-demand markets.

The ministry said it would not regulate market prices of limes, as the current demand has simply exceeded supply.

Every year at this time of year the price of limes goes up. This has been happening for years ! I guess limes just don't produce a lot of fruit this time of year.

For the purpose of cooking, I think that lime concentrate does the job. But for an adult beverage garnish, not so much.

That said, limes are exactly the same price as always (about B5) where I live. If they doubled the price, I would still buy them. The limes here are delicious. thumbsup.gif

Obviously we are in a lime crisis. Would not concentrated lime juice be a good alternative? TB50 per liter at Makro.

...the perfect alternative to ruin your drink!

Wow, common sense and a grasp of economic reality being shown.

Lets hope this trend continues.

Limes are even cheaper in the UK than Thailand now and double the size and quality. Grow lemons and use lime or lemon juice until prices drop, all vastly cheaper options than the silly small overpriced Thai things.

It worked for the Royal Navy as an anti-scorbutic duringthe Napoleonic wars and after.
