Smuggler's mistake turned rescue into tragedy
By TRISHA THOMAS and COLLEEN BARRY

CATANIA, Sicily (AP) — Rescue seemed so close at hand.

BANGKOK: -- Gen Worapong Sanganetra, Thailand's supreme commander, on Tuesday called on Vietnam's Chief of the General Staff Sr Lt Gen Do Ba Ty during his official visit to Vietnam, Viet Nam News reported.

The visit, which ended on Tuesday, was designed to allow the supreme commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces to introduce his new position to Vietnamese military leaders, a practice observed throughout ASEAN.

At talks, Ty expressed his hope that the general would make fresh, practical, and efficient contributions to defence cooperation between the two countries.

Bilateral defence affiliation has grown extensively, especially after an agreement in 2012, which promoted exchanges, personnel training, communication, joint patrols at sea, and search and rescue activities, Ty said.

The two officers discussed national, regional, and global situations as well as issues that could affect security and defence of each country and the whole of ASEAN.

They also worked on orientations and measures to bolster army cooperation.
