Crowds worship the 'Naga body' found in Roi Et province, 23 April 2015.

ROI ET — A protest flared up northeastern Thailand today after police confiscated a figurine that locals believed was a genuine corpse of the mythical beast known as the Naga.

Hundreds of pilgrims gathered in Roi Et's Baan Kan Sai village today to pray to what they believe to be a dead body of Naga, a snake-like dragon featured in Buddhist cosmology.

Sayan Chomkamsingha, the 41-year-old owner of the house where the alleged Naga body was being enshrined, told police he found the object while he was fishing in a nearby pond three days ago. Sayan said the Naga's body was moving and slimy when he first encountered it, but turned into bronze the moment it touched the air.

Police arrived at Sayan’s house today to take the figurine to a local office of the Department of Fine Arts, where officials would determine whether it was an archaeological object and therefore a national treasure. Upon hearing the news, more than 300 pilgrims in the community began booing the officers and formed a mob, preventing them from taking the figurine.

Odd story. You would think the policeman would fire one shot in the air

to warn the villagers, and then they would scatter like the wind. Looks

like a serious loss of face for the policeman...

Or that crackers become "the body" of someone who died 2,000 years ago, and that wine can be transformed into his blood. Or that snakes, mules and burning bushes all speak. Of course there are those who to this day believe the earth is only 6,000 years old !

How much LaoKhao does it take to see bronze objects moving? I wanna try that. Seems a cheap and legal alternative to all other drugs.

Did he turn it around to spot the stamp "Made in China" at the bottom?

Most things found in a pond are slimy and will be slippery (Moving)...once dried.......the true object is revealed (mud and slime removed) some of these poor uneducated isaan people don't have the intelligence to work that out.....a bit like most religions that explain anything that they don't understand as being an act of a God of some sort.

Can't comment ... laughing too much from all the comments posted. Some very creative.

Of course a few aptly pointed out correctly that wherever there is religion there are delusional people. Still if if gives the poor folks some type of hope and comfort who are we to deny them.

It's called symbolism <snip>.

Those people really do believe it is the Naga and Mr Sayan is a bare faced liar in true Thai style.

It is this kind of mentality which is holding Thailand in the middle ages. Gullible idiots, liars who manipulate them and those who go along with the lies because they think they can profit.
