EC to submit opinions on draft charter to PM this week

BANGKOK, 13 May 2015 (NNT) – The Election Commission (EC) has expressed readiness to present the Prime Minister with its suggestions on the draft constitution within this week.

EC Secretary-General Puchong Nutrawong stated that the commission has already reviewed the first draft of the new constitution after it was finished by the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC). He said the EC is in the process of compiling its feedback, particularly on election-related provisions, while evaluating its own performance in the past in order to improve the efficiency of future elections.

Mr Puchong projected that the EC’s suggestions will be forwarded to the Prime Minister no later than this week. Among the laws likely to be proposed for amendment are those concerning the agency’s issuance of yellow and red cards to election candidates, the existence of the election organizing committee, the postponement of the polls, the vote counting procedure and the adoption of the German electoral system.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General revealed that the EC has prepared plans for holding a public referendum on the draft charter in case one is to take place. The plans have been adapted from the ones used for the 2007 charter referendum.

At the same time maybe the EC can present their findings from their fact finding (beano) educational trip to Scotland to view the referendum.
