Desperate in need to get a license to ride scooter

Been living in Phuket for awhile now, didn't have papers before but now I have all the papers you name it, i.e. a Non-B visa, a work permit, a bank account, a lease and an Internet connection at home...[emoji1]

Anyway, been riding scooter around town and trying to avoid Police everyday, but I believe that's not how it works. So, I have decided to get a license and buy my own bike. Can anyone please advise me how to get my license done here in Phuket? I know exactly where the office is, just need some of you to kindly give me some guidance so I can get ready for it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.[emoji6]

You'll need copies of passport (photopage, visa page and extension page), copies or workpermit, medical certificate and with those go the the DLT (Saphan Hin). It will take you about 1 day.

And you need your scooter of course.

What about a Certificate of Residence, and the OP's driving/riding licence from their home country, which may be able to be converted?

Op has workpermit, so no certificate of residence required.

Home motorbike license may be helpful to avoid the practical testing, but is also not required.

So none of your suggestions is needed.

Hmm Stevenl did you not forget something?

You have to do the test, new style and if you're not familiar with Thai road rules u will fail.

Yes, of course preparation never hurts. Test is available online, just do search here.

Also some of the other tests will be required, color blindness, reaction, peripheral vision, distance perception. Not always all of them though.

Go there early. They check your papers. Then do the colour and break test. After this they give you a paper with your test date in 4-6 weeks.

Come on this date again and do the tests.

And make sure you go early!.... Take sandwiches as well as it takes a whole day.

First date will be 1/2 day, second date as well.

Because Schlog is right, I forgot that for new dl's they have now separated the paperwork and theory from the practical test.

If you need the DL desperate then go with your papers to the office in phang nga town. Be there at 09.00 then it's done till 14.30.

Not many people there and easy going.

Easy to locate. Directly on the left side when entering town.

Thank you, guys! And when you mentioned test, is that a written test or practical test? I believe I can do well in a practical test, but definitely not on a written test. Where can I find this test online? Any links? Thanks a bunch!

If you have a valid home country DL for a m/bike then you most likely won't need to take written/practical tests.

The written test can be supplied in English, they give you a sort of highway code paper to study for 15 - 30 minutes (at least they did way back in the stone age when I took the test), then you have to tick your answer in a multiple choice format. Can't remeber how many questions asked.

Do a search on the forum, the test questions are here.

Before you had to score 24 correct out of 30 questions (80%). Recently that changed. You now need to score 45 out of 50 (90%). Know of a Thai person who went there last week. She scored 44, so failed. Before they allowed you a second attempt. Not this time. They made her come back the next day (she scored 45).

I got my license in Phuket. Had a valid license from my country (car and motorcycle) and valid international license. They disregarded both, claiming "maybe they were fake" and required me to take all the tests from scratch. As with all Thai offices, which laws they follow are up to them...

Just submitted the paperwork for car and motorbike license in Phuket town last week..

I got my home car license but no motorbike..All paperwork correct and sorted

but Got exam appointment for JULY 15th....

TIT so slow..

When did it get so slow? They used to do everything in one day until last year. Have to renew my license soon and if they give me a date sometime end of July I wont be able to ride legally as my license expires earlier than that.

Also how does delaying people more than a month increase their throughput? Can't see how this helps.

Sure it helps! With a waiting time from 4-6 weeks they don't have to handle regular 4 week tourists. lol.

Renew no problem, all done in half day.
