BANGKOK: -- A 45-YEAR-old member of the red-shirt movement, who was arrested on Thursday, confessed yesterday to spreading false rumours about Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, but added that she had no intention to destabilise the state. She said she had invoked her rights as a Thai citizen to criticise the premier.

Rinda Paruechabutr is accused of breaching the Computer Crimes Act, Article 116 of the Criminal Code and for giving rise to panic. She was arrested under Article 44 of the provisional charter on Thursday in Pathum Thani province for circulating false allegations that Prayut and his wife Naraporn had transferred Bt10 billion to a bank in Singapore.

Police said a court arrest warrant would be issued later.

The woman is a member of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship.

Police believe there are more people circulating the same false rumour against the PM and his wife.

Article 44 allows the National Council for Peace and Order to enforce martial law, the emergency decree and Internal Security Act to tackle security and political trouble to ensure efficiency in enforcing the military government's authority.

Lol...

She had no intention of destabilizing the state, but spread rumours on the internet of the PM embezzling 10 Bn baht out of the country. She thought that was stabilizing then?

Then she seems to think that spreading lies of this magnitude is simply 'criticising' ?..... ok.

Well she certainly fooled a lot of TVF suckers ! biggrin.png

She should be doing serious time for defamation of character.

She has breached a Thai law in a way which attempts to seriously undermine Prayut's credibility as a corruption reformer.

Throw the book at her with civil and criminal prosecutions. Civil for personal damage, criminal for political fallout and trying to destabilize the regime.

She claims not to want to destabilize the government, who can believe this self confessed liar. What was she doing disseminating this malicious rumor?

Even wearing her best eco friendly community conscious T shirt wont save her from the consequences of this action.

Jail needs someone like her to help with rumors. Twenty-five years would be appropriate.

I didn't know defamation was a right. Even though Prayut made himself a political figure, he can be defamed, because Thailand doesn't have a "public figure" lower standard for defamation like the West. Defamation is a civil and criminal offense in Thailand, not a right. Even truthful statements can be defamatory if they expose personal private information with intent to harm. Yet, there is no media outcry for using social media to smear the PM with an obvious fabrication. Why is that? They are more concerned with Tangmo's photos being released by a hospital worker. Sorry, but Tangmo isn't newsworthy.

Who would have thought a red shirt spreading lies.. what a world if you can't trust a disciple of Thaksin anymore.

I never believed it for a second.

I do believe however that all the army fat cats and their wealth needs some serious explaning. I have believed that before silly gossip rumors being spread.

That is a given that they too need to be examined but there are so many that need to get examined. But this was a rumor aimed at cause trouble and stirring violence.

Yep and now she has been caught. She probably should of been asking for the unusual wealth to be investigated online instead of making stuff up.

She'll seriously regret it when she's in the clink.

Problem is (and I acknowledge it) that whoever is in power goes after the previous ones in power (if they are not of the same group). I had hoped this would change, it did not but even so its great that there is a change otherwise those previous in power would have gotten away with it.

Hopefully the next government has the balls to go after those who were corrupt in this government. Its sad that this is the only way to weed out some of the corruption. I would rather have seen them going after everyone equally but this is better as nothing and I would not call it political because a true crime is committed when one is corrupt.

Political is when someone makes up charges and goes after you.

That is the perfect caption for the photo.

she says: "..... she had no intention to destabilise the state. She said she had invoked her rights as a Thai citizen to criticise the premier."

So she believes she has a right to tell blatant serious lies.

Seems about tight, normal red / udd approach.

IMHO people like her don't work alone, she's probably part of an inner udd cell.

Which is why the general needs to be very vigilant.

My question is...

Is this the first ones or the second ones, or the other ones, and which is the someone?

The issue here is not so much the veracity of her claims, or in this case the falsity, but the fact that so many people believe that it could have been possible, even plausible for someone in power to have done such a thing. That has nothing to do with military or civilian govt but more the deep and abiding suspicion that anyone could be on the take. That's a sad thing.

Tried not to name specific parties as it applies to all in power. Sorry if it confuses you.

I hope he personally sues her for slander and spends a few years in prison.

After more than 10 years of watching one of the biggest criminals in Thai history blatantly rob their country, why wouldn't they believe it? The real question is why anyone would elect one of his bribe-taking henchmen so he can do it again.

....can anyone explain what is going on in that photo....

Now waiting for the mails which promise to share some of the 10 billion parked because my first name starts with an 'r'

....can anyone explain what is going on in that photo....

She's whispering in his ear another rumour, did you hear the one about.

The photo makes me wonder about, about the credibility of just about everything in this country.

"She said she had invoked her rights as a Thai citizen to criticise the premier."

No, what you did was spread BS rumours in the hope of causing unrest. Idiotic behaviour.

How does spreading false rumors undermine the credibility of someone who committed criminal insurrection?

How does spreading false rumors undermine the credibility of someone who committed criminal insurrection?

Does it?

Anyway, here we have a women admitting to have lied. As she is a red-shirt surely she has undermined the credibility of all decent, not lying other red-shirts?

The Australian politician Joe Hockey just took Fairfax Media to court over a defamation case, claiming a series of articles they published - "conveyed a series of defamatory meanings, including that he "accepted bribes paid to influence the decisions he made as Treasurer".

He won the case and was awarded around $200,000.

Seems like Thailand is not the only place where there is a limit to what you can say about someone.

How does spreading false rumors undermine the credibility of someone who committed criminal insurrection?

How does being supported by a poster prepared to post blatant lies help hers?

nice shirt of hers. "Eco-friendly" is a word from left anti-government discourse in all left-tolerant countries. Eco-activism is the worst type of activism.
