BANGKOK — Thailand's Justice Minister has advised two Pheu Thai Party politicians who were recently jailed for libel to file for a royal pardon from the Thai King.

Pheu Thai’s spokesperson, Prompong Nopparit, and former Pheu Thai MP Kiatudom Menasawasdi were sentenced to one year in prison in Supreme Court last week on defamation charges for telling reporters in 2010 that a judge met privately with Democrat Party politicians who asked him to drop a lawsuit against their party.

The constitutional court judge, Wasan Soipisutthi, charged the politicians with defamation a week later. A lower court handed them two year suspended jail term, which they appealed up to the Supreme Court that sentenced them to one year in prison last Friday.

The two men are currently being held at Bangkok Remand Prison.

Today Justice Minister Paiboon Khumchaya said that although Prompong and Kiatudom cannot appeal their case to a higher court, they are eligible to apply for a royal pardon "like all other Thais."

Every year, King Bhumibol, 87, pardons thousands convicts on the recommendations of government officials and the Royal Household Bureau.

Gen. Paiboon insisted that Prompong and Kiatudom will not be treated unfairly because of their political affiliation with the Pheu Thai party, which led the elected government toppled by the ruling military junta in May 2014.

Justice minister says Prompong must accept the rule if he wants to seek Royal pardon

7-27-2015-8-56-08-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Justice Minister Paiboon Kumchaya said Monday that he had no objection to a reported plan by former Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit to ask for a Royal pardon.

Prompong was sentenced to one-year imprisonment by the Supreme Court after he was found guilty of defaming former constitutional court judge Wasant Soipisuth.

Justice Minister Paiboon said he did not consider Mr Prompong of being a politician but an ordinary citizen who has the right to appeal for a Royal pardon.

He explained that if the former Pheu Thai spokesman met the Corrections Department’s requirements eligible him to seek Royal pardon, then he could formally take his case to a committee in charge of considering the pleas for Royal pardon.

The minister assured that he would be fair to all regardless of their political affiliation. However, he warned that Mr Prompong and the Pheu Thai party must accept the ground rule.

He said that several requests for Royal pardon were rejected by the screening committee because they did not meet the set requirements.

And no doubt he'll get the support......those at the top again.........

Not sure if previously, I've ever heard a justice minister, no less, go public suggesting to imprisoned criminals, to apply for a Royal pardon.

What idiots. They get 2 years suspended sentence so no jail time and instead take it to another court and get 1 year in jail. Now they will seek a pardon from the king. They should rot in jail just for their stupidity. By the time a pardon is granted it will be time for the release.

Oops! I forgot they were politicians. That explains it all!

Heaven forbid we be naive!

"The defamation lawsuit was lodged with the Criminal Court on June 15, 2010 against Mr Prompong and Mr Kiat-udom by Mr Wasant who accused the duo of telling the media that he allowed representatives of the Democrat party to see him while the court was considering a court case against the Democrat party which could lead to the party’s dissolution.

The Criminal Court found the two Pheu Thai MPs’ accusation against Mr Wasant groundless and not an honest expression of opinion. It sentenced both of them to one-year imprisonment which was suspended for two years and fined each of them 50,000 baht."

Used by one side (person) more than any other over the years ... it's interesting to see a little switch-around occasionally.

On what are you basing your assumption that he there isn't justice for all, except his political affiliation? Try to be logical rather than expressing your unfounded bias.

Take of those blinders, this redshirt is a known liar and now he lied inciting hatred and came off with a slap on the wrist like all of them on both sides. He however appealed and they got bored with his entitlement and locked him up.

Your holding onto straws accepting his is guilty but should not be punished. That is what is wrong with the red supporters they just hate the law. (and facts).

And they got justice. They were found guilty and sentenced in accordance with the law. A suspended sentence and a fine.

But they wanted to make political gain by appealing. No lawyer in his right mind would have advised appealing given the undeniable defamation and sentence.

They hope to turn it into the usual denials and claims of it must be political.

Defaming a senior member of the judiciary is never a smart move, in any country, let alone one that criminalizes defamation.

And you call others naive for answering your insinuation that they are just being purged. They committed an offence, were tried and found guilty, sentenced, appealed and received a more severe sentence. Dumb arrogant shits.

But that attitude, you can't find me guilty because I'll cry "it's political" sums up the Shin gang. It's as though they think that's one big get out for any crime they commit. Just like their boss tries.

I'm no expert on this...

But I thought in order to be eligible for a pardon, the convicted person has to have served some portion of their original sentence.

Normally, you can't just walk into prison on Day 1 and then apply for a royal pardon, at least, so I thought...

They have only just gone into prison, now looking for Royal pardon,

only in Thailand.

regards Worgeordie

suppose you'd be sitting in there for 6 months before deciding to try your luck.

I'd have one submitted before the chains went *clank*

And the clerk would look at the sentence date, and file it away, probably in the round filing cabinet.

I hope they hold their breath waiting for a pardon. thumbsup.gif

Neither of them deserve any leniency as they think they are above the law. Something that was drummed into them by the Shins.

Justice for all? Difficult if you yourself want to purge the truth when it's not convenient to you.

So, Justice Minister urges jailed people to apply for a royal pardon. No problem. As he also indicated 'as far as possible within the written laws and rules'.

How about justice for" President of the Southern Press Association Chaiyong Maneerungsakul, who is facing a court trial for allegedly hiring gunmen to kill his 48-year-old wife Wanphen in a rubber plantation in Songkhla province last year, was among five individuals appointed as advisers to Justice Minister General Paiboon Khumchaya."

Yes, Paiboon really cares about justice!!!!
