Special bomb use indicates different suspect group

BANGKOK: -- Forensic specialist investigating the Ratchaprasong deadly bomb explosion Monday blast have discovered strange bomb shards and shrapnel which they say are not normally seen in devices in past bombings in the country.

Specialists from both the police and military have been collecting shrapnel and bomb fragments at the site since Monday night and what they found was a device that is not normally used in past bombings in Thailand.

Fragments discovered at the blast site are made up of a section of metal tubing and 2 types of metal pellets.

The metal tubing is between 1.5 – 2 cm in thickness and authorities believe it was used to contain the explosives.

More than 100 metal pellets have been collected and they came in 2 sizes.

Some were 0.6 cm in diameter and the remainder was 0.8 cm and was employed as fragmentation to cause maximum damage.

The bomb is believed to have contained high grade explosives but it has not been determined yet whether TNT or C4 explosive was used.

Authorities suspected a timer – either a digital wrist watch or a mobile phone; was used to set the device off.

Earlier Royal Thai Police commissioner Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuong said, “We have not yet determined the type of explosives material used. What we know is that the device was contained in a metal tube and wrapped with a piece of white cloth.”

The materials used in this device differ from other devices in other past bombings and authorities suspect that the bomber was highly skilled as only 3 – 5 pounds of explosives was used but metal pellets were used to exponentially increase the amount of damage.

The force of the detonation resulted in fatalities at the scene and caused damage on structures as far away as 50 meters.

Buildings on the periphery of the blast such as the Police General Hospital, Gaysorn Plaza and the Hyatt Erawan Hote, some 50-100 metres away, suffered glass damage from debris and the force of the explosion.

But surprisingly, the main Erawan Shrine which sits only five metres from the deadly explosion site, suffered only slight damage.

Sounds a bit high tech for the normal players, so I would be looking as to who has access to people with experience in terrorist activities using explosive devices and who would benefit from creating damage of this nature.

Very amizing, a french citizen has been arrested at BKK, Police think explosive could be TNT or C4,

French military storage in Thailand - please explain.

BBC are reporting the shrine has re-opened already which hardly suggests a painstaking ' fingertip ' search. I can't confirm but other posters are saying the area was hosed down the next day so maybe showing all is well and under control is more important, don't want to lose tourist money.

If subsequent claims of scientific evidence are made where will it have come from ?

Your comment would have more credibility if you could back this up for the rest of the people reading here could see where this information was obtained. You know how rumors start?

The bomb maker clearly had expertise. TNT is dangerous to work with and C4 is considerably more powerful and versatile, so my guess is that C4 is more likely. The bomb squad reckons 3-5 lbs of explosive, so 20 kg would be enough to make 10 bombs of that size. I too hadn't seen any reports of a theft of 20 kg of C4 from "French military storage in the south of Thailand"; indeed I am not aware of French military facilities in Thailand. Some elucidation on this latter point would be interesting?

in case of c4 I reckon use not more than 500g for blast of that size.

Btw there is not any record of French MBS in Thailand ,I think someone is trolling..

The bombing was at about 19:00 Monday night; the hosing and clean up began at about 12:00 noon Tuesday. That's an elapsed time of 17 hours.

Not very clear which country you are talking about?

How easy would it be to get 20kg of C4 into Thailand from France?

But surprisingly, the main Erawan Shrine which sits only five metres from the deadly explosion site, suffered only slight damage.

Obviously protected by whatever god(s) the shrine represents. That will make this place even more popular on lottery day!

Yes. It took some time to remove body parts, but the forensics team went in, on hands and knees and with their own lighting, at about 23:45 Monday night. They went over the immediate area, inch by inch, several times, but the more remote areas had to wait until daylight. The team picked up absolutely everything, so hosing down was primarily to remove the stains.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. In Thailand, we think of "this country" as Thailand. C4 is hard to get here, so the possibility of it having been smuggled in from France cannot be ruled out.

17 hours ... 12 or so were at night and it was probably too dark to see much

Edit: Sorry, I see that others have posted the same and also an explanation of the search

Far too competent for red shirts imho, also though some red shirts are no doubt capable of murdering political opponents I doubt they would have the stomach for calculated premeditated murder. I suspect the location of the bomb as well as the victims gives a clue as to who may be responsible.

Evening news yesterday (18th August) showed the Nation TV's drone shot of the bombing site and fire hoses were spraying water around the shrine and a lot of scrubbing was being done.

Correct, identifying victims that have suffered strongest force of blast could rule in possibility of planned assassination.

To me anything listed as motive so far dose not seem real, its been to bloody,to organise,to precise for PT,Southern insurgents,Ujgurs..etc.l,and none terrorist organization taking responsibility.

Someone dose NOT spending big money and time without big motive ..to much of blood to be just another message.

Don't be too harsh Artisi. He might better have said "the south of France" in the first place, but the information is nonetheless of interest.
