BREAKING NEWS Nightclub fire kills five women in Cambodia

Featured Replies

At least five Cambodian women died and two men were injured in a nightclub fire in the capital Phnom Penh, police said on Tuesday.

The blaze broke out at the Key Club late Monday night and is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault, Net Vantha, a deputy Phnom Penh police chief, told AFP.

"Five women died from suffocation in the nightclub fire," he said, adding that two Cambodian men were also injured.

Net Vantha said police and court officials were investigating the incident and no one had been arrested yet.

A daytime fire at the same venue in 2013 killed three people, including the pregnant wife of the club's owner, he added.

Last November, five people including an Australian tourist, died in a nightclub fire in Cambodia's northwestern Siem Reap province, home to the famed Angkor temple complex. – AFP, September 8, 2015.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — A large fired that apparently started in the sound mixing room engulfed a popular nightclub in the Cambodian capital, killing at least five women trapped in one of the rooms, an official said Tuesday.

The fire started two hours before the club was to open at 10 p.m. Monday for the night's entertainment, said Col. Neth Vantha, the chief of the Phnom Penh fire department.

He said two of the victims worked at the club and the other three worked for a local drinking water company and had come there to arrange an office party. The victims, aged 17 to 28, died of suffocation from smoke, after the main door of the club caught fire, he said.

The smoke swirled inside the room where the five were sitting. Two men were critically injured, Neth Vantha said.
He said preliminary investigation indicates the fire appeared in the sound mixing and control room, presumably from an electric short circuit. It took 23 fire trucks to put out the fire in a three-hour operation, he said.
He said the same nightclub had burned down in a fire in 2013 also when three people were killed, including the owner's wife.

A Phnom Penh nightclub was swept by its second fatal fire in as many years on Monday night, with early blame falling on an electrical malfunction, which one fire safety expert called the leading cause of blazes in the Kingdom.

Monday’s fire comes less than two weeks after two others broke out just hours apart at a Phnom Penh garment factory and a local bank branch, with faulty wiring believed to have played a role in both. Initial investigations into Monday’s conflagration at the nightclub have pointed to an electrical fault causing the fire that killed three teenagers and two members of staff, with flammable decor reportedly facilitating the rapid spread of the blaze.

According to Phnom Penh municipal deputy police chief Neth Vantha, who is responsible for fire investigations, initial witness testimony suggests the blaze at the Key Club in Meanchey district’s Chak Angre Krom commune initially began on the first floor and quickly reached the ground floor by engulfing cloth used to decorate walls.

I just hope the lives lost will lead to better safety measures. RIP to those departed and to my hopes.
