check up packages at the bangkok hospitals - experience

Featured Replies

There is nothing more important in life than good health. It's good to have yearly checkups, especially if there is any condition that you must keep watch on.

What tests are really needed ,

I see on your link prices from 7000 to 99,000 baht

Every hospital seems to have a set of tests and they are not all the same ????

Do they all have an in-house blood testing lab or do they send it out ?

I have no idea what a testing lab costs or the people to run it ????

I go for an annual check up every year, and what I do I always compare the price of the different packages from the main hospitals. Looking at your list from Bangkok hospital, I thought first of all, that there was some sort of miss print were they quote 99,000bht. At that price I could afford to fly back to the Uk and have a comparable test done.

This year I did obtain a price from Bangkok hospital Rayong, they had a special promotion ( in August )of something like 6500bht for a package that usually cost 11000bht yet looking through the list of what they actually test, I decided to travel to Bangkok and have a much more comprehensive package at Yanhee hospital for 10600bht plus an extra test for about 750bht.

I would add that I am in the age group 50+and have previously used Bumrungrad Hospital and St Louis hospital, both in Bangkok.

If you're considering one of the check-up packages at Bangkok Hospital, it might be worth waiting a couple months. Traditionally the Bangkok Hospital group has offered a substantial (50%?) discount off their packages during the month of December.

Figure out what tests you really need to have done, at age under fifty, unless you have specific health concerns or have a family history of something, I suggest it might be blood work for, lipids (cholesterol), liver function, renal (kidney), Hep A,B, and C, A1C (blood sugar), Add to that tests of Urine and Stool, a Chest Xray and an EKG and you've covered pretty much all the major areas for a person of your age. If you approach a medium sized hospital you can all those test done, without doctor consultation, for around 3/4k baht max.

You have to remember that many health testing packages here are sold with a view to sell on business so if the hospital tests for as much as they can, they're likely to find something not quite right somewhere. But really you should tailor your health check up package to suit your profile, age, sex, your history, family history, current state of health and risk factors. If you're overweight or your BMI is high, focus on lipids and sugar. If all the males in your family died of prostate cancer, focus on PSA testing, and so on etc.

In the Pattaya area I recommeng Phyathai Sri Racha. They have monthly promotions and even mone promtion prices will be way less than at BPH.

Wherever you go, do your homework first as to what tests to get. Do not rely on a package to be complete or all relevant.

Note that you can always add on tests to a package and this will often be cheaper than getting a higher cost package.

Sheryl is there a list of the tests you should get done that might not be normal in Thailand but are normal in the West ?

Thanks for the info

All the tests that would be recommended in the West are available here, though tests for women are often not conveniently packaged. It is more the reverse i.e. there are some tests done in Thailand not needed in the west (and some included in "top end" packages by private hospitals that are not necessary anywhere, e.g. total body scans...unnecessary radiation and likely to lead to unnecessary further tests/procedures). Specifically, because there is a high incidence of primary liver cancer in Thailand, ultrasound of the upper abdomen is included in man packages, whereas it would not be in the West.

Suggest you google check up and screening reocmmendations for your age. Note though that any prior medical problems or certain gfamily histories might indicate a need for other tests.

I go there every year. By waiting for the most suitable promotion to come along I can get the full range of standard tests plus PSA plus a full-abdomen ultrasound for little more than the normal cost of the ultrasound alone. I think I paid 4800B this year.
