CHIANG MAI: -- On a mission to unravel the mystery of the Baby Nemo surrogacy mix-up case, 3D Investigates producer Eugene Bingham and reporter Paula Penfold went to Thailand.

So it must have been something close – a sincere realisation, a deep understanding – which overcame us as we stood in the grounds of an ancient Buddhist temple in northern Thailand, reflecting on what had just happened.

Since we first spoke more than a year ago, 3D Investigates had been dealing with a Kiwi family grappling with heart-breaking and troubling questions. The baby they loved was not theirs – an IVF-surrogacy arrangement in this Thai city of Chiang Mai had gone horribly wrong. The little boy had no genetic connection to them.

Somewhere out there were his biological parents; somewhere out there, too, perhaps, were the children born of the three embryos they had produced with the husband's sperm and eggs donated by a family member.
