Hi guys,

Lived in bkk last year spent the twelve months there doing the things I dont think id be comfortable sitting next to my old man and enjoying :o

Although I still visit Bkk monthly from down here in Phuket this is my fathers first time to Los.

Any suggestions where he may enjoy the nightlfe with a more respectable level of enjoyment?

P.s hes 58 shure he would be up to the normal delights of Nana/cowboy but with his son , not so sure. Ill find that out when he gets here i guess.

Just need a back up in case hes against it.

regards

Take him to nice restaurants and bar..

I reccommend V9 at Sofitel hotel - good affordables wine and nice food (a bit pricey tho) and nice view

Well, I recommend some of the tourist stuff: Grand Palace and if he is into wood buildings the Golden Teak Palace (which is included in the ticket for the Grand Palace) is fabulous. Floating Market (try to go later in the day, early am is super touristy), a day trip to Kanchanaburi (at the very least, even spend a couple of days there--depending on how much time he is here).

Sometimes its nice to show the other attractions Thailand has to offer :o

:D Don't forget Jim Thompsons house, you can have a nice lunch there too. In the evening I would go to either Vertigo, Scirocco or the Millenium Hilton on the river and watch sunset (only the latter suitble if it is raining!) Then once he has had a good night's rest take him out and test the muscular power of his heart in Cowboy or Nana.................. :o

I'd take my dad to get a hair wash, cut and then a foot massage. Those nubile Thai fingers prodding him here and there will be enough to get his blood boiling, without the 'in your face' action in Cowboy. Save that for the 2nd day.

:o Nat's Dad !

Take him to Dreamworld - that up at Langsit, just beyong Dom Muang Airport.

The crocodile farm at Samut Prakarn

Chattuchak Park - where you can hire pedal-boats and he can just generally run around, and buy food to feed the fish.

Top floor of Big C at Pratunam is a cinema and he can have his photo taken with the model of Keanu Reeves (in the role of Neo from Matrix).

Sometimes mahouts take elephants along Sukhumvit and you can buy bananas and feed them.

Book him for in a week at the Penthouse in Pattaya.

One of the rooms with a jacuzzi and a pole with flashing lights...and all that.

If you do ,please dont pass by the numerous boy go-gos as he might think you,re up to no go...maybe. :o

A nice evening would include a:

Skytrain to Saphan Thaksin station, get the Hilton Boat, have a drink in the bar upstairs with a super view.

Back on Skytrain to Surasak station, go to Blue Elephant for Thai Food.

See if he would like the Q Bar atmosphere or maybe more fun doing a good gutter crawl at Soi Cowboy or Nana.

Blimey - 12 months in BKK and you don't know anything interesting to do other than Nana, etc. :o You'll probably not get a better example of why the visa situation is being tightened.

I'd suggest asking your Dad to show you around - despite him never visiting. It sounds as though you'd both have a better chance of actually experiencing Bangkok that way.

My 71 year old grandparents are visiting me right now, so I have also been struggling to find interesting things to do.

An excellent evening out in Bangkok for those who don't like the bar nightlife is to see the Joe Louis puppet show at the Suan Lum night bazaar. Incredible show... each puppet requires three people to operate, and the movements are increibly lifelike and realistic.

The show runs from 7 PM to 9:30 PM, and then you could have a look around the night bazaar afterwards.

More info here.... Joe Louis Theater

You are an example of why I stayed away from this forum for a while.

The guy is asking for advice and help and suggestions, and you come on with your smart arse comments. This is not neccessary at all. I dont mind a bit of sarcasm or a bit of fun, but your comments are just plain insulting, and if you see the reply from the OP, I would have thought a reply would have been forthcoming!!!!As in apology!!

Expressing sadness about people who spend lots of time in Bangkok and purely see the seedy side of it is a valid viewpoint held by many Thais and Farangs in Thailand (certainly away from these boards). This is one of the worlds most interesting cities - if you can't see past the HIV infested, exploitative sex industry then I think it is entirely valid to have your approach criticised. To then have your father come to visit you in Bangkok and be wondering about showing him the same sad aspects to me seems even worse. While my expression of these sentiments may have appeared somewhat blunt I certainly don't back down from the basic sentiments and the nature of the posting didn't seem to merit an academic critique approach. I don't think you can simply dismiss this view as constituting gratuitous insults. This is a concern shared by many in the LOS and is one of the concerns behind the recent tighting of visa rules. If you share the posters approach to life in Bangkok then personally I wouldn't consider it a loss to these boards if you did stay away from them.

In terms of the OPs reply to it (a) I fail to see what owning or not owning a company in Thailand has to do with it and (:o the choice in Bangkok is not between seeing the seedy nightlife and seeing tout infested tourist attractions. I didn't add any constructive suggestions to my posting because frankly I thought they would be wasted on the poster (ie he wouldn't be interested in them). I do frequently give constructive ideas of where to visit in LOS to good postings.

If I actually thought the poster would have been interested in them I would have suggested taking his father to see some of the Thai sides of Thailand rather than the farang sides such as tourist sites (floating markets, grand palace, etc) and sex tourist areas. In Bangkok these may include having a look around the greenbelt area south of the Chao Phraya river which is very pleasant to cycle around and maybe visiting some real south east asian style markets like Talart Khlong Toey. Simply getting the beers in a Thai bar is a great night. The Chao Phraya river trip suggestion made is another great Bangkok trip. Outside Bangkok getting away from the touristy areas such as Pattaya and (if you do need 'sites') maybe seeing some more traditional Thai cultural areas such as the cultural sites of Buriram, Ayuttaya, Lopburi and (if you can manage without sites) seeing other non-site based simple Thai towns like Phetburi, Khorat, Khoen Kaen, etc. might open both the posters and his fathers eyes to the more beautiful side of LOS.

Certainly apologies if my sentiments were originally expressed a little too bluntly but certainly no apologies for the basic sentiments.

Interesting valid last post from Lucky as my mum has visited me 4 times here in the last 7 years and weve checked a few places out within Thailand and also Laos ... some areas more touristy than others .. the last time time we ended up near Pranburi at the 300 mountains national park for a few days well off the beaten track and have to say it was the best visit yet .... :D

There's a lot to see out there !

The whole point of my posting was for advice on peoples experiences of where to go , not to get into a slanging match.

I dont beleive I mentioned that I frequent them ALL the time . Have you NEVER been?

Your second post would of been a more suitable reply to my op.

Btw if ever you need to find a bar let me know :D apparantley you assume thats what I do with all my spare time ( what little there is of that!).

:D:D:o:D:D:D:D

...and the bars are an undenyable part of Thailand! Nothing wrong with having a night out in Nana or Cowboy, just don't spend your entire holidays there.

I take visitors on their first day into China Town and drag them around the small alleys. After that across the bridge is a temple (name??) with hundreds of turtles.

@lucky1: your second post was worth the effort writing (and reading) it!

it seems to me that anyone anywhere has a problem called 'what to do with the folks'... no matter what country. people who live in a country or area dont know as much as tourists because , simply, they are living and not visiting /travelling....

have been to many places with my folks that i would never have gotten to see if i travelled on my own since spare time usually involves family/friends house etc.

will now have the joys of seeing bangkok for the first time with thai boyfriend and father and brother in law whom also have never seen bangkok. (up country folks)

this should be an experience unto itself :o)

but nice suggestions for in far future when my folks may come to meet HIS folks (an other surealistic scenerio)

I suggest that you could do worse than take him to one of the "cabarets" such as Simon. Some of the other names evade me for the moment.

IMO these shows are top class (and could never be considered "seedy")

I believe that if someone was coming here for what might be the first time (or perhaps a one off visit) they should not miss the "seedy" aspects as well. Imagine him going back to the old dart (or wherever) and his mates asking him if he visited Patpong "and if he hadn't, what would he tell them.

Bangkok is known world wide for it's seedy side. This side has been orchestrated by Thais and not in general by falang (although many falang have capitalised on the opportunities it presents)

One does not experience the "whole" by visting just the "part"

I am sure that by the time he comes to leave you will have offered him a well rounded experience, and if he a "single again" man he will surely be back. :D
