CityNews – An MOU was agreed upon between Chiang Mai public transportation representatives and the government to further improve the standards of pricing and customer service provided in the Chiang Mai on February 9.

Pol.Maj.Gen Pacha Rattanapan and Pol.Maj.Gen Montri Samboonyanon presided over the meeting that was attended by representatives from Taxi companies and the ubiquitous Red Songtaews of Chiang Mai, among others.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by all parties, which promised to improve customer services and more strictly regulate pricing.

The government is currently trying to improve the image of public transport in Thailand which often gets bad press for charging too much for a journey, refusing to use the metre and refusing to accept passengers and/or dropping them off before they reach the destination.

This might have something to do with it.

Following a barrage of complaints about meter taxi drivers in tourist areas the Prime Minister’s office has ordered an overhaul to take place in six tourist hot spots. It has been announced that Chiang Mai, Chiang Ria, Pattaya, Hat Yai, Phuket and Samui will all go under the spotlight.

PLEASE! I am getting sick and tired of song taew drivers asking two or three times the normal price for a quick trip down Huay Kaew rd to Thae Pae gate.

The fare is meant to be 20baht, and some vans get a government subsidy, but the drivers seem to be in a feeding frenzy, overcharging tourists and other foreigners what they like.

It's a common sight to see many Chinese tourists trying to sort out fares. I don't argue and wave the drivers off, watching them go with an empty van.

I don't argue I just keep saying 20 baht and let them drive off if they want to be greedy... makes me laugh that they just drove away without making any money. Stupid thinking on their part.
Recently paid 50 baht from airport to Maya. Usually pay 40 to bus station from around Maya.

As far as them changing their ways...hmmm, I'll have to wait and see how they do after a couple of months.
I think they'll always ask a higher price of the tourist and might be willing to negotiate down, just don't see much honesty in the majority of them.
I say get rid of half of them... and bring real public transportation.

The government is currently trying to improve the image of public transport

They try and try and try and try....aso. At the end no plan, no action...as always...

Why CM doesn't have any TAXIS? Because......memorandum of understanding.....
