We live in Hua Hin, and bought our car from a guy in Bangkok. The car has Bangkok number plates. When we bought it, we went to the Transport Office near Morchit BTS, and changed the paperwork to my name.

We are now ready to sell the car on. If we find a buyer in the Hua Hin area, do we all have to go to Bangkok to swap the names on the paperwork to the buyer, or can we do it at our local (Prachuap / Pranburi) transport office?

Thanks in advance for any answers thumbsup.gif

I think BKK plates have a free pass throughout the whole of Thailand....The local office might decide to replace with local plates - or not to.....

If the new owner wants to keep Bangkok number plates they can got to Bangkok and do it there, there is no need for you to go too if you have given the new owner a power of attorney form, signed blue book ( possibly certificate of residence needed by seller but Bangkok might not need this ) copy of passport photo page and visa page etc

If you do it at your local office the new owner will have to make 2 or 3 trips as DLT ( Department of Land Transportation ) will want to change the number plate in any case you don't have to go with the buyer if you give them all the required documents.

Mrs Jas tells me that you have the option to keep the Bangkok plates on the car even if you complete the sale in Hau Hin.

So a different opinion ... best ask at the LTO

we have Bangkok plates on our truck, but live in Mukdahan

never had any thing said about the plates,we were asked once if we wanted Mukdahan plates

we said no thanks as Bangkok plates don't get stopped very much at check points

thats the only thing I see good about the Bangkok plates

Yep - in CM and BKK plates on one of our cars......

No problems & no offer to change - year after year....

Or..... you can do get Hua Hin plate for your car at your Hua Hin Land Transport office.

Not a difficult process and not expensive but you need to visit 2-3 times and then get a new set of local plates.

I did it in the past when I moved to another province. Useful only if you want to sell your car or motorcycle and do the transfer at your local office.

After you get the new plates, you can sell your car and do the transfer at your local office in Hua Hin.

So you are saying that you cannot conduct a vehicle sale at a LTO if the plates are from a difference Province.

My wife is wrong ... that is unknown ... she will be devastated if she finds out ....☺

That was my experience 6 years ago. It may have changed, Check with your local LTO.

I think that things have changed since then.

Quite a few years ago now my wife’s car was registered in Kanchanaburi and we were living in Bangkok at that time. She went to the local LTO and gave paperwork and money to a guy who was sitting outside at a desk. A while later back came the new tax.

When I asked why she didn’t go and do it herself she said, I can’t do it here, I would have had to have driven to Kanchanaburi and for a little extra I have avoided the long drive.

My first experience of under the table………rolleyes.gif

Now, you can definitely tax a car in any Province which is not registered in that Province, as others have said and I’m pretty certain that Mrs Jas is correct in what she said earlier ………..But yes confirm at the LTO … easy

I think this has been done to death nowwhistling.gif .... time for another topic smile.png .... anyone .... just lets have confirmation at sometime from Mr UKJASE smile.png

It's funny how many different opinions its about this. When I bought my car 2nd hand, three years ago - I just took the documents from the prev owner, including the blue book, and went to my local DLT in Sukhumvit/BKK. Registered under my name - no problems.

Now that I resold the car, the new owner insisted we had to go the same DLT as the car was originally registered. I said no need, as I didn't go there myself - but since he insisted, I didn't bother to argue about it and went along.

Bought my HD (bike, not a car but same-same) in Pattaya. BKK plate since new. Lived all over, from Phuket to Chaing Mai, where I sold it. Still had BKK plate. Buyer was from Hua Hin, wanted plates from there to match all his other vehicles. DLT in Chaing Mai did all the paperwork, all he had to do was go with the BKK plate and get a Hua Hin plate. Easy.

Did you actually have your name in the green book ? if so how did you do it if not by going to the DLT in Bangkok maybe you used a "fixer" or "agent"
