Is it "wrong" to live in Pattaya and not be interested in Thai culture?

I think most modern people live in a bubble these days and only go out when they have to. Don't most of us take care of most of our daily business online? Sometimes I'm stretching for a reason to go outside, especially in the tropical heat.

Sounds bout right.

Weekdays I only leave the house to go to work.

Weekends I only leave the house to go to grocery shopping.

How somebody can be interested in Thai culture in Pattaya?

Pattaya is to Thailand what Las Vegas is to America.

Just a Circus!

I wish we had the world class entertainment that Vegas has. Seen one ladyboy show you've seen them all.

IMO Las Vegas is a spectacular place to live. That would be one of my first choices if I lived in America.

I set up my gym at home now, so I have even fewer reasons to go out. Going to Tonys gym 4 - 5 times a week was not much fun.

I would consider Vegas to be the perfect example of American culture.

I've not been to Pattaya, but I wonder if it isn't the perfect example of Thai culture?

"I think we can all agree that if you're not Thai at heart you will get bored of the Thai culture after a while."

Aside from French cooking, which has world-wide appeal, I think we can all agree that if you're not Thai, English, German or French that at heart you will get bored with Thai, English, German or French culture after awhile. American culture is the only thing that everyone around the world can't get enough of.

In America the kids expect the parents to support them well into adulthood vs Thailand which upon adulthood begin to support the parents.

... and you think that only happens in Thailand? Of course you do!

No of course not. I didn't say that did I? Because that happens in other Asian countries as opposed to Western countries does not mean it does not happen in Thailand. Culture is rarely exclusive to one country. Thai dancing is a good example. It comes from Cambodia (don't tell Thai people). But it is still Thai dancing.

For example, you won't see Thai dancing in the Philippines, but you WILL see a culture of children looking after and supporting their parents.

If someone tells me something special about Thai culture, I'm assuming such is a unique attribute, seen only in Thailand. I'm sure, as an aficionado of all things Thai you can give us some examples.

Your assumption is wrong. There is no requirement that culture be unique to be culture. Noodles for example. Part of almost every food culture in the world. Some cultures have guards armed with sawed off shotguns and others pistols. Some cultures shoot guns at holidays others shoot firecrackers. Thailand celebrates three new years most other cultures don't. Most elements of culture are shared by more than one group of people.

I've never been bored in Thailand. Frightened, happy, sad, sick, healthy but never bored. When I lived in Pattaya I walked the length of Soi Buakhow and back every day. Talk about not boring - it was a different world every day. You can be anything you want in Pattaya. Feel like dressing up as a fairy princess - that's OK. Want to drive around on a gold bicycle with a gold sequined suite? No problem. Build up muscles - get tattoos and start a protection racket - good for you. There was a guy on Walking Street who used to introduce himself as the King of Canada - some people believed him. Today I helped plan a lunch for a bunch of American servicemen who have a building project at a local school. There is always something to do.

I've seen at least 5 distinct types of ladyboy shows. 1. The big caberet shows at Tiffany. 2. Small ones at places like Stringfellows. 3. After hours clubs where they have a ..... 4. Whitey tighty shows like they used to have at Adams Apple in CM. 5. Comedy drag shows with the 200 lb divas. Thailand has an interesting and varied ladyboy culture that even includes ladyboy boxers (not underwear the boxing/fight in the ring kind).

(You caught this one late... are you rescanning the thread to make sure you responded to everyone?)

My assumption is correct. If a particular attribute of Thai culture is not unique and shared with many other nations, I don't need you pushing it as a Thai-only feature.

This came about as part of a discussion regarding how Thais look after their parents - something quite common around the world.

You've taken the term "Thai apologist" to a whole new level - you're a fanatic.

LOL> this must be one of the opportunities I've missed out on. I have never been to and never will go to a ladyboy show - I'm just not interested.

My first tourist trip to Thailand I was dragged on stage at the Alcazar! I've got pictures. You should go once.

And spaghetti is not really Italian because it comes from China. Thailand's culture is a mixture of many other cultures as is any country except those who have been isolated from other people. The Philippines have taken the worst elements of many cultures and molded them together that's why so many people from there want to leave. That's one difference I've found being Philippine people want to leave the country and will go just about anywhere where as Thai people are happy at home and normally sad if they leave.

Ladyboys are part of Thai culture and a coming of age thing in Thailand. It is a part of Thai culture that many homophobic Westerners don't seem to be able to understand.

That's not culture, that's economics.

Thais have not had to work overseas in order to get good jobs like Philipinos have had to. Up until the late 90's, there were large numbers of Thais working overseas. The Saudis actually did them a favor when they kicked the Thai workers out. The Thai labor market has been chronically short of workers for over 15 years now, unlike in the Philippines. Some Thais still do work overseas, mostly agriculture workers in Israel, I believe.

I have worked with Thai professional in many other countries, they are just as happy (or not) to work away from home.

Please stop baiting me to discuss the Philippines. What you say it total nonsense, but a lengthy post to school you in is way off topic and will be deleted anyway.

Here we go - I'm homophobic because I'm not interested in ladyboy shows. cheesy.gif

Without going too far off topic as this has always been a hot topic on this forum... I don't consider transexuals to be men (pre or post op), but either way I'm not homophobic. I have gay friends and they don't worry me in the slightest.biggrin.png

Cheers!
