Culture Ministry concerns with moral principles and ethics in society

The Ministry of Culture is upholding moral principles and ethics by applying the local way of life. Moral principles will also be instilled in education so students will be able to work more closely with their communities and temples.

Khunying Khaisri Sri-arun, the Culture Minister, spoke about the ways to foster goodness and happiness in the education system of Thailand. She said that the current education system primarily focuses on textbooks more than morality. As a result, many children lack the development of thoughts because they usually try to memorize the teachings. She said the new education system will enable students to work together with their communities and temples, and they will be able help promote and conserve different religious activities.

Khunying Khaisri said some Buddhist monks are not ready to help the society to uphold moral principles and ethics. Thus, the ministry will use the local way of life to help strengthen this issue. She said the government has assigned all involved ministries to cooperate in developing a good and happy society.

Yep, just get rid of the text books and listen to your elders.

You don't need to read, we can teach you all you need to know and you can learn all you need to know by hearing our spoken words.

Will Thailand's education system ever modernise?

The general knowledge of the average Thai is an absolute joke and their maths is disgraceful. And most Thai's (except those educated abroad or in international schools) that

I know who are by Thai standards well educated are really not well educated at all compared to similar aged people in UK, AUS, Singapore and even Malaysia.

Upon reading this sort of news, one is given to wondering where the good Khunying may have got her ideas regarding education. Her initial idea sounds simplistic to the extreme.

"Memorize the teachings" (sic) How else do we learn? Her whole idea sounds rather fuzzy and impractical.

Morality is something a society tries to foster and teach but Thai society like most societies in the world is riddled with corruption and bad influences. It's up to the parents to try and instil some basic morals and ethics in the kids in the home and the Thai teachers help the students when at school.

It (Thai society)also has a lot of wonderful things like family values which, thankfully, have not been completely lost in the materialism race.

As for trying to get them to think, well, the very existence of this board speaks volumes for people's inability to think most of the time..

Politicians make sweeping statements and promises without thinking. Governments pass legislation and make rules without thinking. What can the kids expect.

Here we see members of a good and happy society with high moral & family values, deep in thought, pondering whether to go shopping or have a nap. Textbooks not necessary.
