Northern students voice suggestions about Thai education

CHIANG MAI, 11 July 2016 (NNT) - High school students in the Northern region have brainstormed solutions to problems in the Thai education in a seminar planned to take place nationwide.

The seminar was attended by more than 50 students who represented school in the northern provinces. Organized by the Child and Youth Media Institute, the seminar will also be held in other provinces, including Bangkok, to gather suggestions from each area and submit them to the Ministry of Education.

Khamin Mulpo, a high school sophomore from Mae Ai district in Chiang Mai, said during the seminar that there should be more alternatives in education since each student had different aptitudes and knowledge foundations.

Pathitta Peearthit, a high school senior from Phrae, suggested that the government should give higher priority to students in rural areas and expressed her concerns that students in other provinces had lower English language skills compared with students in Bangkok.

Wonderful to read about students taking the initiative and doing their own research. Regrettably, one doubts very much if anything will come of it as the Education Department bureaucracy is so entrenched and moribund it would take a miracle for them to act on advice. Let alone advice from children.

Plus, I wonder whether these kids have a fully open forum or are they being monitored by folks who are not seen but will ensure in reality the status quo remains. Hope not.

Good for them. Many things have changed in the world due to the stubbornness some may say of students. It is to be hoped that at least some of their ideas are taken on board and put into practice.

There is actually a law in place that states students are not to be hit but like many other things in Thailand, that appears to be ignored. Look at the student who received his 40 whacks just recently.
