Just a FYI for those around or visit Phetchabun.

Big C have now added some freezer new cabinets and is selling "farang" bacon, I bought some nice "middle" cut bacon and noticed they also have back bacon, streaky and even "Wiltshire" bacon.

They also had Chicken burgers , beef burgers etc, and variety of other stuff "western",although I havnt tried that as yet.

I am interested in beef burgers for sure. I find the bacon here pretty good just sliced very thin. But Bangkok bacon is a good brand.

Will go tomorow and check it out.

The Bacon is cut a bit too thin for my liking, the same company also

does what it calls breakfast gammon, and horseshoe gammon, which

is nice and thick.

Petchabun Makro have some decent back bacon, best grilled as a bit too much water content when fried.

The days of the long trip shopping to Phetch will soon be gone. In the town of Bung Sam pan, sometimes referred to as Sapsamothot a large Tesco's is under construction on the north bound frontage road R21. It is larger than the one in Nongpai, a couple more months of building I would say.

Big C in Pattaya have been selling it for a while now, and not too bad. However have started buying back pork and curing my own bacon and ham (back leg). Tried the belly pork but was too fatty for my liking.

Not found any decent local bacon, so started making my own this month.

First attempt dry curing 2kg of belly pork turned out pretty well, good flavour but a little fatty. Easy to do, but took 10 days to cure (first photo).

Second attempt, a couple of pork fillets brined for 24 hours. One hot smoked over coconut husk in a metal steamer (apologies to mrs for burning hole in the bottom). One baked with shallots and wine. Ate all with a salad so no photo.

Latest attempt. Home cured ham hock, today it came out of a 3 day cure (second photo) tomorrow I am going to cold smoke using a tin can, soldering iron and pruning's from a Rose Apple tree.

Bacon recipe from the River Cottage book, the other recipes/ideas from Google.

Cheers Bob

Apparently that new Tesco will be opening in early October. Not as big as Petchabun but as you say , bigger than Nong Phai and Pai Sali. Spoke to the staff in Wichien Buri and they say they don't think there will be a KFC included. Still, the car park looks decent with shades for parking and that little steakhouse next door is a decent little air con haven.

Most Makro sell half decent Sausages, Pork a little bit peppery but saying that nice Cumberland & Beef all sold in 1kg packs =12 dogs. Their in the freezer compartment.
