Surin Airport/Buriram Airport

Are these two provinces served by one airport, or by two ? (I am referring to scheduled passenger flights.) If so, where is it, or they located ? I have received conflicting information from two different people, neither of whom has any apparent reason to mislead me. Rather than repeat the contradictory information here, I will await replies, and possibly comment later.  If your information is more than one year old, please indicate that.

Last Time I flew into Buri ram was about a year ago Nok air flight - you can book a seat on a shuttle bus that completes the 'flight' to Surin so yes I would say served by one airport actually at a place called Satuk a quite a few kilometers outside Buri Ram

Flight to Surin on the Nok air schedule from Don Muang will show Buri Ram and shuttle bus

Agreed. Air Asia also fly to Buriram. The airport is in Satuk which is approx 40kms north of Buriram town.

There is an airport called Surin airport (which I didn't know),  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surin_Airport  Both are easily findable on Google maps

The Department of Civil Aviation does not know it either as the army has the say on that airport. There has not been a commercial flight for about 8 years out of Surin. Burma airport serves both Buriram and Surin. Nok Air and Air Aisa have fly and ride connections.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surin_Airport

That was just one of many PR tries to get the airport to open for comical flights but was shot down by the Thai army and the Department of Aviation. The Surin airport is closed

So, if I may summarize;

-the airport in Meuang Surin has no passenger service.

-there is only one airport offering passenger service in the two provinces of Buriram and Surin.

-instead of being located near one of the two provincial capitals (Meuang Buriram or Meuang Surin), it is conveniently located in the middle of nowhere, just south of Satuk, which is on the Mahasarakham border.

Correct. It's not in the middle of nowhere if you live in Satuk.

It was a political deal with the help of a certain football club owner.:whistling:

Don't know where you get that idea from, as its older than the person you are suggesting is responsible. I thought it was built by 'your lot' to supply the (then) war being undertaken.
The story I heard was if the stadium was deemed to be too far away from the airport, he would then build a new one! (Which never happened).

I am referring to the Buriram airport. As as for my lot your incorrect Surin airport had nothing to do with a certain war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surin_Airport

Buriram airport by all reports I come across came about because the politicians of Surin were caught napping and powers to be saw an opportunity even thoe the money maby questionable to open an airport after the Vietnam war. As it stands now Surin airport because of its location to the city and it short runway can get safety approval from the DCA and the army that controls it will in no way approve it. Just came across a very new article.

Call to make Buri Ram airport international

SUCHAT SRITAMA
THE NATION August 29, 2016 1:00 am

TRAVEL operators have urged authorities to upgrade Buri Ram Airport into an international facility to increase the number of Southeast Asian tourists travelling to the Northeast.

Wandee Tiansawakit, former president of the Professional Tourist Guide Association in Buri Ram province, said tourism operators such as hotels and travel companies wanted the government to promote Buri Ram Airport as an international airport as well as add a new cargo terminal to the airport in order to attract more domestic and international airlines.

She said Buri Ram had for years been a famous sports destination thanks to the Buriram United football team and the team's world-class stadium.

She said big matches at the stadium lured the young and families to the province while local organisations had positioned Buri Ram as a meeting and leisure destination thanks to 60 ancient castles there, its unique culture and six inactive volcanoes. "If Buri Ram Airport is promoted as an international airport with a cargo terminal and a customs office, it should attract more domestic and foreign airlines to operate flights there and it will result in the province gaining more tourism business."

If the airport were upgraded, other provinces in the lower Northeast region such as Surin, Srisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani were expected to gain more visitors, especially from Southeast Asia.

Currently, only two budget airlines, Nok Air and Thai AirAsia, use the airport. More than 80 per cent of tourists travelling to the region are from other provinces.

According to Wandee, Buri Ram provincial authorities will open a new gateway to the region at Ban Thok Phet, facilitating cross-border tourism between Thailand and Cambodia.

Numchai Pornpirunroj, owner of Porn Numchai Travel in Nong Khai in the upper Northeast, said most tourists visiting the province were from Vietnam, China, and South Korea. Some retired expatriates from Japan and Western countries lived there.

He urged officials to promote heritage sites in Western markets, such as Ban Chiang-Unesco's pre-historic site and Uncle Ho House in Udon Thani.

I was just by it this past week.:whistling:

This has been talked about for years. From what you say of the roads it looks like it will still be a long way off. Wasn't this where the border dispute was in 2011 ?

Close but no.  Prasat Ta Muean about 15 km further east, Ta Khwai another 10 km further east then Chong Chom Border crossing area.

Just North of Prakonchai there is also a large parcel of land designated as a airport. It even has (had) a small control tower. This airport must be about equidistant from Buriram as the one being used at present. Wonder who owns that?

Maybe private or just derelict government land. There was an old airport for Surin on the way to Ta Tum that's also 'long gone'

From what I was told at the time (1986ish) the favored site for the airport was going to be between Buriram and Prakon Chai. The Thai military were supposedly pushing for it, probably as the Surin runway was not long enough.  Don't know exactly where. As we all know a parcel of land owned by the wife of a prominent person won. The best place should have been near Krasang so as to serve both Buriram and Surin.

Incidently I have an old Bangkok Airways timetable from that time which shows a proposed route of BKK-Surin. I believe the military objected even though Bangkok Airways were going to pay for upgrades.
