Finding People Who Have Experience Outside Of Thailand

Featured Replies

I would like to view some homes in Surin that have been built and supervised by a contractor that has experience building homes outside of Thailand.

Has anyone had any western style homes built in Surin? My wife has three rai of land in Ampur Prasat.

I believe you're headed for trouble with this approach, my friend.

I have 20-years' experience in building western-style homes in Japan and South Korea. It works there because of the similarities in weather. However, even in southern Japan, which has weather approaching Hawaii or Florida, major adjustments must be made to be compatible with the environment.

Considering the tropical climate in which you want to build, you need someone with experience in the tropics. Otherwise, you will run into major trouble with things like moisture control, pest control and mildew. The lack of western-type insulation, lack of Western floor-coverings, and the "airiness" of Asian tropical homes is there for a reason.

My guess is that you want a "western" style home but with all the built-in adjustments to a tropical environment? A tall order. There's a reason why you don't see Cape Cod mansions in Hua Hin, or Northwest Log Homes in Chiang Mai--and it's not because you can't get the materials. (For a price you can fly/float anything just about anywhere nowdays!).

Thank you very much for your input. Maybe I mistated a bit. A western style looking home would probably be more correct.

For insulation their's an Australian company out of Bangkok that goes all over Thailand and provides the best insulation available.

I have one man already that has done this for two of my wifes cousin, but I would like to speak to more than one contractor.

The contractor that built homes for my wifes family used to work in Saudi Arabia.
