Sorry if this is covered elsewhere--my search did not find it.  Just want to confirm--its not necessary to have a work permit to own a car, correct?

Posted

No, not required. Work permit is just one of the options to meet the requirement of address certification.

If you are lucky......Some immigration offices will not do it.....Perhaps someone can clarify if your office does.....

What are the other options?

To own a car, no WP needed.

To buy a car cash, no WP needed.

To buy a car on finance, WP needed.

You should be able to get a certificate of residence from immigration - though i hear it can take weeks

the quickest way is from your embassy.  though, at the British embassy at least, its expensive - 2800 ish for them to stamp a form that you fill in.

I have bought and sold, registered and taxed cars here on tourist visas without issue

To transfer ownership Address Certification needed, work permit could fill that role but not the only option. However for us chinese folks getting a addr.cert. way very difficult, chinese embassy won't issue these without 90 days report, even you're on 1 year Non-B visa! I got around this by go to pattaya and buy car in Chon Buri province, they're very friendly to foreigners, got my Addr.Cert. in minutes.

As long as you can get a certificate of residence from immigration or your embassy.

Three years ago we traded in a car which was originally bought in my name against a new car to be bought in my Thai wife's name.

Toyota gave us an extremely low (might even have been zero %) finance deal on the 1m baht balance, despite myself not having a work permit and my wife not even having a job.

Thai are not given work permits, hence they not ask for one.

You did not buy the car, your wife did. So of course your workpermit was not required.

I live in Chiang Mai Province and on both occasions I have boought a new car, in order to register the vehicles in my name I have been required to obtain a certificate of residence from the Immigration Department which was not a problem.

Never any suggestion of a work permit being required.

This is not correct.  I financed my Toyota Hilux 4x4 with Kiatnakin Bank on a 30 day visa exempt stamp.

The work permit thing is only a requirement if you are trying to get finance without a Thai guarantor.

It is a free document. You were scammed.

Another method of showing address is getting a yellow house book which takes 30 minutes.

Free if you want to wait for 2 weeks or more but if you want it in 30 mins then its 300 baht.

Yellow house book takes 30 mins ?

Or do you mean after you've got all the necessary papers translated and officially stamped as authentic then the local Amphur office can give you a yellow book in 30 mins ?
