Thai DMV gave me 2 Driver's Licenses

One for cars, one for motorcycles. I see that both licenses are temporary (yet the Expiry date is 2 years from now).

 

Do they send you a single dual purpose license in the mail? Or should I expect to carry both of these for the next 2 years?

Yes you only get individual licenses and you have to update them on a routine basis as per the expiry dates

As far as I know there are no dual purpose licences here.

 

Temporary licence is for 2 years (used to be one year). Full licence is for 5 years.

Will I have to get the medical and residence certificate again for the full license? Or can I just show up with the temp one close to the expiry date (and if so, how late should I wait?)

Yes, same paperwork. Only for renewal of 5 year license no medical required.

Renew them a day after they expire and you get a extra year on your license, that's what i did last time when the transport office was being blocked by protesters

Of course you don't get to combine your licenses on one card, that would halve the revenue of all the companies involved in producing them! These contracts don't come cheap you know.

That works for "5 yr" to "5 yr" only.

The 5 yr license will be valid until your 5th birthday after issue date.

So up to almost 6 yr.

(and so the 5 yr always ends on your birthday)

 

But 2 yr license is exactly 2 yr from date of issue.

So do your own math.

(I don't tell: wait with the 2 yr until your next birthday is past )

It sounds like I can go in any time to get the 5 year one, is this the case?

so if you go a week BEFORE your birthday to get the  Temporary licence  , it is good for 24 months ?  or 13 months ?

If you're from places like the uk or Australia you dont need a thai drivers license ours are ok on thai roads

Only for 90 days, then you have to get Thai licence.

No. Temporary license is always 2 yr from date of issue.

You have up to one year after expiry of temporary or previous 5 yr to renew without extra effort.

No you're wrong. The geneva treaty states as long as you dont have a visa you can drive . How do they know if you have a visa or not ?

They ask for your passport. Try explaining the Geneva Treaty to a Thai policeman. Good luck! Anyone who lives or visits Thailand has to have some kind of visa. Your insurance may also be void . Although International Driving Licences are valid for up to one year after arrival in Thailand, after three months many comprehensive insurance policies are made void if still driving on a foreign licence.

Thai cops know which countries can drive and not every country needs a visa for a length of time. Anyway all good.

Actually I just checked I got 11 years,it finished in 2018,got it in 2007

In the case of foreign drivers in countries that ratified the Geneva Convention,  until a specific country becomes the normal place of residence for those drivers foreign licences are acceptable.  It doesn't make reference to visas.

I know people driving on a uk license for the last 25 years no problem just show the cops that and they know .

Iam a long term visitor that has had a few car accidents over the years that were not my fault, I got into no trouble.
