PHUKET: -- The new Phuket Governor is to use existing budget from the OSM Andaman (Andaman provinces group) for face recognition technology to scan drivers and vehicles passing through the Tha Chatchai checkpoint in the north of Phuket.

He will use some of the budget to extend the checkpoint from four to eight lanes.

Gov Chockchai Detjamornthan announced his proposal at his first “Governor Meets Press” meeting held last Thursday (Oct 13) at Provincial Hall and stated that he is sure the government will approve the budget and that Phuket will have new face recognition technology in place to help support the island’s security.

“I talked with officials last week about security improvements for the island and we agreed to utilize the OSM Andaman (Andaman provinces group) for a project to improve Tha Chatchai checkpoint which is our city gate.

Does he realise he's in a Province not a city?

Do other provinces have such checkpoints at the border?

why stop there? RFID chip the foreigners too

Not to worry, I am sure it is coming SOON.

Complete tonk unless its tied into a National Criminal and/or Immigration system, along with input from the Land Transport Office. (which doesn't exist as far as I'm aware). Just scanning in images and not processing them is a waste of time.

A nice little pie in the sky earner for someone though- stand by for more 'increased CCTV' announcements as well.

Think there is already a plan to track our SIM phone cards ....

Ah so they shut it totally off and then a gate opens when your face isnt recognized as criminal.

You have to wait, till you get clearance. The only area in Thailand with this.

Phuket becoming a "community".

Already thought the excisting one is a waste of money. The same with control posts in the middle of nowhere.

The boy have to try and look like they are working

Glad to hear that they spend money on something useful.

Would be waste of money, preventing flooding's, fix bad roads or clean waste water :giggle:

It's going to need some pretty impressive technology if they are to recognise the faces of the driver and half a dozen passengers through heavily tinted windscreens. Though as the article only mentions drivers then any dodgy characters can just sit-in the back seat.

I really don't understand what they are trying to achieve?
