Storm & Flooding

Featured Replies

Major storm and really heavy rain in the past day or so causing flooding in many places including the ring road which I believe was blocked. Why isn't something posted in the news forum so people can be aware of what is going on and advise other people that live on this island this instead of the usual tosh?

Lamdin area all under water, cars floating about as usual and many shops/restaurants all trashed. It's gonna be expensive.

From what I have seen on FB most areas are flooded to some degree. Area outside BigC looked to have maybe 18 inches. Well stocked in preparation so no need to even think about going out for 7 days. Be careful out there people.

Plenty of seasonal rainfall here in Phangan.  Nothing closed...roads are ok, so far.

Not many tourists here, but full moon is only 11 days away.  I am more interested in the ferry services than the roads, as I need to get to Samui Immigration very soon.

I suspect that posts are limited because locals who post on here know better than to drive around the island during very heavy rain - unless they have to.

The problem is not just the heavy rain. There is also a large tide surge at the moment and this is preventing the rain water from flowing into the sea.

eg yesterday morning at 6 am. Bangrak was flooded. Later it was clear.

I drove to Jack Doyles in Maenam last night to watch the Eng v Aus game and the roads were flooded with up to 2 foot of water, all of the way from the 7/11 near the sign at Fisherman's Village up to Supot Electric. Very bad flooding with stalled cars and bikes at the side of the road.

Take care people. More rain coming until after the 5th.

Any updates re whether any new landslides occurred at Nathon hill or big rock & is the mountain road usable between Maenam and Lamai? Neither were mentioned on FB this morning.

Does anyone know if the ring road is clear now?

I am in Bangrak, but fancy a trip to Tesco.

I stayed at home all day yesterday, but ventured out to Choeng  Mon last night on my  bike, but the road was closed (roped off) due to flooding.

Most people were cutting through via the ghost road yesterday. It was just about passable in a car but many bikes didn't make it through. The road near the 711 crossroads was breaking up as well. As it has stopped raining for a while I expect the levels have dropped but haven't been out today.

Four dead, one missing as storms lash South

We are on Ko Tao now heading to Bangkok soon. We want to go on land by bus. Anyone knows whether we go through? Should we go asap or wait 1 day?

Have there been any interruptions of ferry and flight schedules this week? Any landslides in Chaweng Noi or Nathon areas? Thanks for any updated information.

Not surprising given there was 60mm of rain in the preceding 9 hours,

Apparently on Saturday there were issues at 17 spots along the ring road with water levels ranging from 50cm to 1m.

Post with link to Bangkok Post removed.

Sorry, I forgot that I can't post links to the Bangkok Post. There was no need to delete my whole post and it would have been polite if you had just sent me a discrete message since we both live on Samui.

Besides that I am really wondering why there was no warning of the storm in Samui News on thaivisa? Why would people visit this website if there is no news in real time just retrospective stories?

Samui media outlets are usually half a week behind everyone else when it comes to anything newsworthy.

Ahh in the good old days rain on KPG would result in grins and knowing fun on this part of the forum...safe in the knowledge the mod was in her wellies taking pics of the happy litte ducks.

Be very careful if you need to be on the road. I just went to the post office in Chaweng when heavy rain hit. On the way to Bangrak the water was rising very rapidly. From no floods to 50cm and more in mere minutes. A lot of drain covers are missing, which you won't notice when it's flooded.

Oh and the soggy ground has nearly toppled the power pole near our house. So we're left with a fluctuating 60-70 volts. Won't expect that to be fixed anytime soon :-(

Ongoing water project on the island has caused a lot of disruption to the roadside drainage systems and also been dug right next to a lot of power poles. Have there been a lot of strong wind gusts on the North and East sides of the island?

The weather forecast was very clear – if one bothers to check it – Wednesday last week it clearly said hard wind, 13 m/s, and heavy downpour Friday to Sunday, i.e. more than 200 mm during these 3 days, with 137.3 mm Saturday only. Having more than 100 mm in one day at Samui results in flooding. November-December are the typical monsun months, so that's the time of the year to check if someone is performing rain-dance ceremonies.

Just went out for a ride  (cabin fever ). There is a flood by the turning to Lompraya in Maenam which is about 18 inches deep, and a small lake now.I saw a few cars go through,  but no bikes. I feel for the people who live there; I suspect it will be bad for a while.

Stay safe all!

Have seen Thais in the middle of the deepest floodings at Bophut Ring Road showing all where not to go. Tip my hat to that.

Many farangs who drove too quick in the floodings, delivering a bad surf to the oncoming cars, which can be broken because only of that.

Don't get excited or nervous, in floodings you have to drive that slowley to avoid making waves for others. It's also better for your own car.

I was driving through it the other night and it was bad, what suprised me is how fast people where going, especially the pick ups going quite fast with no regard for other cars/shops causing massive waves... I was in my wifes car and as we are new on holiday here did not know it was going to be so bad... water is in the back of the car still and I did feel the car loose grip for a few seconds as though we was in a boat... to be honest I am quite looking forward to getting back to Isaan in the sun to dry it out, plus this place is so dull in the bad weather combined with the silly prices and generally unfriendly people, I always had Koh Samui down as a beutiful place but to be honest I prefer Phuket, hope this weather stops soon! everyday locals say it will stop tomorow but they have been saying that for 4-5 days now so I assume this will continue for another few weeks :(

I was pretty busy last week with something that wasn't completed until 2am Saturday morning. Next time you know there is going to be more than 200mm in 3 days I am sure I, and many other members, would appreciate it if you posted accordingly on the Samui forum.

Well I shared it on my Facebook; however November-December are the month to look out for heavy monsun-rain, no matter how busy one is – don't you have a mobile smart-phone..? – my android-phone has a weather forecast on the tapestry behind the app-icons, can't miss it opening my phone...:whistling:

Good morning :-) Hope everyone is safe and enjoying the sun now :-)

We need to drive from Lamai to immigration today, can anyone update us regarding the roads ? Can we drive through Chaweng with a normal car ? We are hesitating on taking the shortcut or Chaweng.

Thank you in advance :-)

No water on ringroad,  Chaweng.

If you are still busy, my weather forecast predicts heavy rain from Monday and a couple of days :crying: – by the way, it also says the fresh wind will cease from Sunday – it's like a fortune-teller's prediction, so no warranty issued...
